Work refusing to pay me

They say I haven’t updated my bank details in the system but I have! HR are saying they can’t pay me until I’ve updated my details in the same, so I updated my details in the system again and HR are still saying they can’t pay me! This is all because I want it paid into my account and not the joint account with my ex that it was being paid into

Arrange a teams meeting , screen share and have HR watch you do it. If you are doing it correctly then they need to take it up with IT.

If you choose not to work then your employer will just not pay you for those days so probably not the best idea. You also can't unilaterally start adding interest and charges, you would have to take them to court for that.

Advice. General. Do join a union.
people, including me, don’t and then when they find they need someone to support them with an Hr problem, realise a union could have helped me and it’s now too late.

I never needed one through a 30 year career. Until my 31st year when I was discriminated against. Oh how I rued I wasn’t a union member. Lesson learnt way too late.

there are unions out there for almost any job. You can just go online and “find a union” site which will point you to best fit, and join up on line. Most have some side benefits of some sort.

Staying at home until you're paid is even more of a batshit crazy approach when you have the option of resolving an HR issue in person with your HR support staffl. But just haven't bothered to yet.

Tell your company that you are charging an admin fee to cover any bank charges and your time that you are spending sorting this out. And interest at a daily rate until it hits your account. Calculate how much this will be and hand the invoice to the HR manager tomorrow.

Well there is no law that says you have to go to work, so it is a matter of contract not statute. I think it is very silly advise myself and likely to result in disciplinary. There is a payroll mix up / cut off problem or something, it will easily be resolved. Nothing you have said makes me think they are trying not to pay you.

it’s like when people on here advise SAHM’s to invoice their husbands for childcare and cleaning hours. Pointless, not likely to achieve anything and cringeworthy.

Getting ACAS involved in what sounds like a simple system input issue is truly ridiculous. Did your relative really do that or was there an actual pay dispute?

where i am you can legally charge them to cover any costs that arise from paying your salary late. There is a defined time when they must be paid (3 days within the usual payment date i think). and i have done that in the past - i added an admin fee and they just paid up rather than dispute it (I think). And then i resigned

don't be a twit -the advice is "join a union" I didn't say "join a union for this issue"

EVERY SINGLE time someone comes on here with a work-related issue we (i do anyway) ask "are you in a union" and the answer is invariably "nope" and i answer EVERY SINGLE time- join a union. I've been in a union for ever and they have been hugely helpful on several occasions. My employer has never known where i got my advice from.

The words "join a union" are not shit advice. They are very sensible advice especially in the UK right now. So wind your outraged neck in.

Caught up with the thread. TBH i think your HR and payroll are being dicks. If you have told them more than once that you have done it, after the second time they should have walked through the process with you. This isn't something most people do more than once, and if the system isn't intuitive then it's rubbish not to help out. (especially since, as pp said, payroll will want this done asap.)

Ring up or go into see hr. Bring your bank details with you. I'm sure they do want to pay you, but somethings not right on the system.

Yes they should have accepted you saying here is my bank details. At this point they have not included you on the automatic bacs run so need to do a faster payment based on your bank details.

Odd system that lets you remove bank details without having to replace them with new ones? Usually if you fail to complete the process it just keeps the old ones.

They're not doing this to be petty. If you've entered the details four times and it's still not working, ask a colleague or friend to watch you enter them and confirm the details are correct.

If it's not a missed checkbox or skipped page when entering the details then it's quite possibly something as simple as entering your name incorrectly and its failing the bank verification - if you've a middle name does it appear in full on your bank card, or as an initial, or not at all?

This happened to me not long ago. As soon as I mentioned calling ACAS and seeking legal advice, somebody from payroll came and had a look and the money was in my bank within 24 hours

Not -you must use x system and ensure it works before you are paid. You are trying to provide bank details they can't just say "computer says no"

Don't do any of the ridiculous suggestions about withdrawing labour or charging fees. Even the union. A union really isn't going to help when you've been paid a few days late and the company are saying they'll pay you as soon as they've confirmed your bank details.

Someone has made a mistake. It might be you. Go into the HR office, be polite and friendly and ask them to help you work out why your amendment hasn't gone through properly.

a union will give you advice on how to approach this. It is always worth being in a union for times when you need good, reliable information.

Where i am (not UK) assuming you have given the correct details at the right time the company is obliged to pay you within (I think) 3 days of the agreed payment date. If that doesn't happen you are perfectly entitled to claim back any related costs including overdraft fees and late payment fees. In some cases you are, indeed, perfectly entitled to charge interest and admin fees.

A union can give you advice on this. They handle things like this every day.

I agree that it is odd that you can remove the data and the system doesn't flag up that there is a blank field. And i also think that HR and/or payroll shouln't just ignore it, but go through the process with you.
