To think if your Covid test is negative, but you have ALL the symptoms

...then it is quite likely you aren't doing the test thoroughly enough?

To get an accurate result, you need to test BOTH the throat and nose, throat firmly enough so you gag, and nose enough so you sneeze. You have to do each spot for at least ten seconds - that's quite a long time!

I see on here, and hear from others that despite sore throats, coughs, sneezes, joint and muscle pain, bad headaches, fever, chills, and tiredness like they have NEVER experienced before, Covid tests return negative results.

It then transpires they are doing a quick nostril wipe round and that's it!

Now obviously there are bugs around. Maybe people are more susceptible to coughs and colds after a couple of years of reduced exposure, but Covid prevalence is increasing again. If you feel dreadful - please take a test and do it properly.

For those that say 'it doesn't matter, Covid's just like a cold now' - that may be true for some. But not everyone. You may be unlucky and get very ill, or have a mild dose but end up disabled with Long Covid. Or you may pass it to someone vulnerable who could end up in hospital.

For that reason, you should still take Covid very seriously, and DO THE TEST PROPERLY.

And I'm sorry if people don't like this message, want to believe it's all over, are bored, or think I am fear-mongering. I would love Covid to no longer be an issue, but believe me, it still is.

Thank you for your attention!

All tests should be performed as per their instructions. The current tests are nose ONLY. The swab is a very short stick. You do not swab your throat.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 29/09/2022 17:16

In my experience, if you have COVID at all (let alone a very symptomatic case), then the test will show it without any need for extreme poking.

If the test is negative, you have a cold.

Sounds like flu.

Yes. Or just a nasty cold, which is what I'm currently suffering from. And yes, I have tested more than once, and yes, they were all negative. It's just a cold.

Super patronising OP. Try again, PROPERLY.

I don't test because I am on a tight budget and its a waste of money knowing whether or not I have covid.

Don't worry, I'm sure OP and the others bleating on about selfishness and whatnot will all step in and pay for your tests.

Dahliasrule · 29/09/2022 17:17

Well, there are five of us in the household. Three have tested positive and two negative, but all are suffering the same symptoms so we are assuming that all are positive. Of the two most severely affected, one tested positive, one negative.

watingroom2 · 29/09/2022 17:18

I want to know anyone would covid test

What is the point?

You can't take time off work with covid- only if you feel ill. You wont be paid extra for having covid.

Unless you have to (e.g. work in a setting that says you must) why would you test?

If you feel /are really ill - stay away from people and work.. if you feel ill go in!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 29/09/2022 17:18

Most tests now are nose only, aren’t they? Both my kids have had positive tests on those.

RedToothBrush · 29/09/2022 17:19

I think the 10 day isolation and free testing needs reintroducing

Have you lost your mind?

No you don't. I've been on the ONS Covid trial since first lockdown and you definitely don't need to do that, I have done many ,many tests and you don't need to sneeze or gag.

It's quite possible to have all the symptoms and not test positive because it's not Covid and just a similar virus.

Some people have vulnerable family/friends and may have covid without symptoms.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 29/09/2022 17:21

But I also agree people should stay off work if they’ve got a cold / flu/ are otherwise ill, as well as if they have symptoms of Covid.

Kids can be kept off school beyond when their symptoms end with Covid - I think there’s a recommended length of time.

My friend was hospitalised with all Covid symptoms and tested negative 5 times. The nurses tested her.

Did anyone make sure the nurse was testing PROPERLY

I often wonder do people not realise that post viral syndrome , which is what long covid is, has always been a thing? Any virus has the potential to trigger the immune system into attacking the body. Infections can do it do , strep throat for instance is a very common trigger for psoriasis. I spent 12 months on inhalers after pneumonia. If your vunerable protect yourself. Let the rest of us get on with it.

I know. I got post viral fatigue after a particularly nasty virus back in 2012. My joint swelled up and I could hardly move for weeks. It was just one of those things

Rooroobear · 29/09/2022 17:35

Fgs bore off!!!! What do you think people had before covid! They all still exist!

Although the reaction from the population if the Tories tried it at this point would be pretty funny, so there's that.

Acrasia · 29/09/2022 17:51

I didn’t start testing positive until day 5, when the worst of my symptoms were over.

lickenchugget · 29/09/2022 18:06

People are not testing or isolating now. As if anyone is going to start, in winter, when their energy bills and mortgages have risen five-fold. Most people do not care if they catch covid; it will be the least of their problems this winter.

RoseAndRose · 29/09/2022 18:16

Unless you have to (e.g. work in a setting that says you must) why would you test?

Because so many of my friends help look after their elderly parents (inc me) and the last thing we want to do is put someone at infection risk if it can be avoided. So I want to be able to give them the information that lets them decide what they want to do.

Ditto I'd keep away from the local shop as I know the manager's wife is currently on chemotherapy, and the last thing that family needs is infection (he knows of course that he's a major risk to her health, because so many people don't pay attention to infection control, but I really wouldn't want to be the one responsible if it did get taken home to her)

Some people just couldn't care less about more vulnerable folk. Until their relative gets Covid & realises just HOW bad it can be. My sister is on her third dose of it, has Long Covid already, & can barely breathe. But sod it, eh? :-(

Yeah and sod everyone who needs to work to pay their bills and feed their kids 🙄

LovinglifeAF · 29/09/2022 17:28

We were too worried about her as she collapsed when we were away for a little trip. I assumed that they would know what they were doing. The twice I saw them do it, they did it properly so I assume the other 3 times they were able to administer the tests appropriately.

Soubriquet · 29/09/2022 18:31

I’ve had strong symptoms and never tested positive. Even when the A&E department was doing the test

Quveas · 29/09/2022 18:32

I've had flu three times. Real flu. I had ALL the Covid symptoms, and for two of those occasions there wasn't even Covid. Stop SHOUTING at people, stop being so bloody judgemental and treating everyone like they are idiots and you are the only intelligent person in the world, and... oh yes, this is all so boring now. Flu is serious too. But the world cannot continue to hide for ever. If you want to please feel free but stop lecturing everyone else.

It's such a shame that shielding doesnt include time off the Internet.

Spoken by someone who gets full pay when off sick. Most people couldn't afford to do that last year. Nobody can afford to do it this year.
