AIBU?
To ask you what's this on my face?
Tigofigo · 29/09/2022 15:13
Red almost circular patch of skin about a cm wide, v slightly raised, ever so slightly sensitive and dry, bit like a dying spot - but I've not had a spot there? No other marks. It's been there a few weeks and if anything I think it's got more noticeable, poss not any bigger.
Am I being unreasonable?

Ok I was exaggerating, it's more like 0.7cm wide. I can't take a decent photo of it as my camera is crap.

Could be any one of a million things, so see a GP if it doesn't go away. Could just be a patch of psoriasis, or a fungal infection, or a wart, or a reaction to an insect bite, but you should get it looked at just in case. Unexplained things like that on areas like the face which are exposed to sun should always get checked if they persist.

Could be a basal cell carcinoma. If it is, it isn't dangerous but needs cutting out asap. Go and see you doctor.

Or it could just be a bit of dry skin. Really there is a lot it could be between dry skin and cancer!

An easy first step would be the pharmacist - they can advise if they think it is fungal and give you over the counter cream.

Thanks - I thought with ringworm it was more of a rash? (Also if it was, where the hell have I picked up ringworm from??)
My mum has had a BCC before and it is quite similar to that.
Pretty sure it's not psoriasis or just dry skin. This is quite distinctive and I don't usually get any skin conditions like that.
Googling acitinic keratosis now..
Tigofigo · 29/09/2022 22:26
I've just realised ringworm is athlete's foot, and my son has had a mild version of that between his toes. May well be that.

It's just a fungus. My kid used to get them off the trampoline which neighborhood cats liked to sleep on. Just looks like a circle of dry skin on its early stages. Easily treatable.

Please have it checked out properly.
What you describe on your face sounds just like what I had. I was referred to dermatology and was prescribed a chemotherapy ointment. The dermatologist explained the cream only works on abnormal cancer cells. On healthy skin, there would be no reaction.
After applying it for a few days, there was a strong reaction. Seemingly healthy skin around it also reacted. I had to apply it twice daily for three weeks. I also tried it on two other patches on my face and they reacted also, even though they didn't itch.
No one on Mumsnet can diagnose what you have. Tell your doctor and ask for a referral.

Maybe make a GP appt for a week or so and spend that time trying an anti fungal cream. If it works, cancel the GP appt.

Sorry, you didn't say it was on your face!
Yes, she did! In the title.

I second this. Got a referral to a dermatologist who said my raised red patch was actinic keratosis. They prescribed Fluorouracil (Efudix) which is a chemotherapy cream. There is a Facebook group where they post advice and pictures so if you are diagnosed with this then I recommend you join as some of the side effects can be unpleasant and your dermatologist might not tell you.
