To wonder what personality trait one has when you comment on a thread without fully engaging with at least the OP's posts?

So many times posters pop on to a thread with

1/ a comment such as "I haven't RTWFT but..." (Here's my utterly irrelevant contribution which wouldn't have been added with a smidge more engagement in the thread)

2/ a question on clarification of something that's clearly answered in the Opening Post ("how old is DD?" OP clearly states her DC is 7yo)

3/ an assertion of something that is in direct contradiction of something the OP has written ("you said you went for Sunday lunch yesterday but today's Tuesday OP" OP clearly stated this happened last week)

4/ adding info to the thread that 937 previous posters have mentioned (afternoon tea at the Ritz isn't £45, OP")

What value do posters think these comments add to the conversational flow of the thread?

Is it arrogance? Naivety? Low reading comprehension? Multi-tasking? Need for human contact of any sort? Just like the sound of their own typing?

AIBU to think posters should at least read thoroughly the OP's posts (it's dead easy) befire adding their twopenneth?

Oh cripes "twopenneth's worth" isn't going to turn out to be one of those phrases that Should Not Be Used and I'm behind the times in not knowing how awful it is to use this term?
😬

Some people are busy or in a rush.

Some people (like me) don't concentrate that hard and often miss things, are multi tasking and don't read things in detail ...

I wonder what personality trait leads people to write long posts about the comments other people make on Mumsnet 🤔

I'm a pondering procrastinator, tbh.

It’s not that deep.

LatinLottie · 29/09/2022 14:13

Not sure, I haven't RTFT but this post is passive aggressive HTH. Wink

GretaGip · 29/09/2022 14:14

If you're not reading things on details because you're Multi-tasking or busy, why do you comment? Please please don't take this as I'm being snippy, I'm genuinely curious.

Another thing that often happens is that your write out your comments, maybe it does not post right away, so when your post does make it, there were similar posts in the meantime

additionally, with regards to the £45 tea post, more people who have actually gone and had a look at pricing, commenting about it, all adds credence to the misinformed nature of the OP. This can also be applied to other scenarios.

Indeed Smile. Many traits come to mind but it would be a bit judgemental to list them all.

bloodywhitecat · 29/09/2022 14:16

Some people skim read. Sometimes key information is buried in a sea of text. Sometimes you type out an answer only for someone else to have more or less the same answer and hit post just before you do.

NotLactoseFree · 29/09/2022 14:17

I always read all the OP's posts, but sometimes don't read all the others. I know the chances are someone has already said what I want to say, or at least some version of it. If I'd read the thread, I might write, "I totally agree with MrsRightSaidFred - your Dp is taking the piss and I think it's time to insist that he pays at least 50% of the bills and stops complaining about your cooking" and then go on to add whatever additional point I want to make. But if I haven't read the thread except the OP's posts I might point that out so that if I am repeating what others have said everyone knows that I don't think I'm coming on with some revolutionary new comment.

So... you can figure I've got a personality flaw if you like. I think it's just about trying not to sound like a dick.

Although I do agree re the age thing - if it's in the bloody OP, it's infuriating when it then gets asked 50000 times.

maddening · 29/09/2022 14:18

Tired?

I am dyslexic and one impact is that words can almost vanish when reading, so perhaps there is that for some people.

I would suspect that it is not one reason.

Changechangychange · 29/09/2022 14:18

I think people mostly like the sound of their own typing, and have poor reading comprehension. You’ll find people claiming they just want to be helpful, but that doesn’t really stand up when their comment is giving the OP a good kicking does it?

CollieWobble22 · 29/09/2022 14:21

People are busy and the browser and app are both glitchy

Quite often on the browser the ads cover half of the OP and often the web page is covered in blank white squares where pop ups usually appear (maybe blocked by a pop up blocker?)

The app is slow. So if you scroll up, you wait ages.

So people speed read, then forget, then can't be arsed to scroll back to the OP.

snowballer · 29/09/2022 15:25

Some people are busy or in a rush.

This is even weirder! Like they think their contribution is so important that they must make it, despite not reading the thread because they're too busy to?! If you're busy/doing other things, there's no requirement to contribute.

SilverDragonfly1 · 29/09/2022 15:29

It's called Main Character Syndrome. If they don't comment quickly, what will the OP do, since only MC's comment would actually be relevant?
