Another crappy dinner, but coffee and ice cream out

Or a better dinner 🤷🏻‍♀️

Like many of us, we’ve been finding the bills and rising cost of food etc hard. Feel like I’m scrimping back on meals and haven’t had many nice ones recently…just lots of very simple pasta and sauce, jacket potatoes..it’s fine but not great.
My Dd, 4 is off tomorrow so I thought we’d have a morning just us at the beach. I only have a bit of change left, do I go for a coffee for me and ice cream for her and have basic eggs & chips tonight or do I get a nicer dinner for tonight as it’s been a letdown all week?

Cannot believe I’m even fretting over a coffee and ice cream, it’s depressing.

I don't understand the point of this thread? Pick whatever you want. If you don't want your daughter to miss out on the ice cream then buy her one, leave off the coffee and get a "nice" dinner tonight if you want.

FuriousFurious · 29/09/2022 16:01

Take a flask of coffee for yourself, buy ds an ice cream and have your planned dinner.

Cherrysherbet · 29/09/2022 16:04

Egg and chips tonight. Treat tomorrow. Sounds lovely. Enjoy op 🥰

I wouldn’t waste money on a coffee out. Take a Flask. Get an icecream if she wants one but a picnic brought from home is fine too.

@Charlotte123456789 Oh that’s so kind of you, but please no, not at all! This wasn’t my reason for the post 🙈feel a bit embarrassed. We get paid likely tomorrow night so all ok, I just wanted to take her somewhere but was feeling a bit crap that we’ve not had the nicer dinners as much recently-just simple things like fajitas, curries etc. Nothing wrong with egg and chips at all, just a very bland week.
Thank you for the kind thought though, but honestly no need 💐💜

If you consider curries and fajitas to be bland then you’re probably not cooking them properly 😂

I’d have the treat and then egg and chips for dinner (possibly in sandwich form).

You do realise OP that there are now a whole lot of mumsnet families getting egg and chips for dinner tonight... 😋

I think Op means that the curries and fajitas are her nicer dinners and that the egg and chips are bland in comparison Smile

And a slice of bread for a chip butty...

diddl · 29/09/2022 16:23

Whtat wuld a nicer dinner be?

Egg & chips might be preferred!

A morning at the beach is lovely with or without coffee/ice cream-save the money anyway!

Flask of hot chocolate & sandwiches from home for lunch at the beach?

When I was a kid if we went out for the day we always took our own food.

For some reason it always tasted fabulous in the car of on a bench looking at scenery!

I'm sure kids often remember the simple things!

Possibly with baked beans as well!

coldfeetmama · 29/09/2022 16:28

I'm off to peel chips !!! Love egg and chips

I may go upmarket and poach the egg then sprinkle a bit of garlic salt seasoning onto my air fryer chips .. mmmm posh me 😂?

Thanks OP .. enjoy your day out with wee one !

Thanks everyone, slightly embarrassed by this post 🙈 was just an end of the month thing and realising that this week has been all cheaper meals…nothing wrong with them, but I tend to only do those occasionally (or did!) and have nicer meals…fajitas, curries, pie and veg, toast, spag bol, lasagna etc.
It was really just an observation of how things were changing slightly price wise for everyone and those dinners will likely be only a couple of times a week now, which seems utterly bizarre on two professional wages! 🤷🏻‍♀️
But yes, we’re embracing the egg and chips tonight…adding brown sauce and ketchup, peas for the other two and even white bread as a treat 🤣Dd is bewildered as we generally only have brown cereal type bread…gotta be white with chips.
Ice cream and coffee tomorrow..the experience of it is much nicer that what’s for tea.
*Tomorrow night will be a different story though! Might do chilli with nachos, cheese, jalapeños..the lot and a dessert 😋
