To buy teen DS second hand trainers?

UserOneSquillion · 28/09/2022 15:46

The trainers he wants (airforce 1) cost around £114. Companies won’t honour student discount on that range either…. I bought him a pair a year ago which he didn’t look after very well, they are now too small and have holes in but I don’t want to spend another £114… I’ve found a pair on eBay, aibu to get these for him?

No. Trainers will only last so long.. is his foot still growing? Look on Nike website they have other nice styles in the sale quite often. They do a student discount too

PeekAtYou · 28/09/2022 15:50

Are they genuine ? I've learned that there's a lot of fake Nikes out there.

What shops or sites don't take student discount ? I had bought Nikes from ASOS, Nike and JD using Unidays codes

Disneygirl37 · 28/09/2022 15:50

I've found the new air forces and air max dont last as well at all. Soles split quickly etc. Especially from sports direct!
I get my kids second hand stuff all the time from vinted my daughter loves searching for a good bargain.
Maybe if he really wants new ones he can get them for Christmas.

Hillarious · 28/09/2022 15:50

My 20 year old bought his own second hand trainers last week. He's an Economics student and knew a bargain when he saw one.

UserOneSquillion · 28/09/2022 15:52

Nike and JD Sports won’t honour the student discount on the Airforce 1 range… 🤨

The pair I’ve found are lightly used for half the price. Yes, soles on his new pair split, really annoyed as so expensive.

I bought some Air Force ones off Vinted for £50 for my daughter. They arrived in excellent condition and she lives in them, I think if you make sure there are lots of photos to scrutinise and they have good reviews, why not?

XelaM · 28/09/2022 15:53

I bought black AF1 for my daughter as she wanted them as school shoes. £37 on ebay. They are brilliant and she wears them every day. Go for it 👍

PeekAtYou · 28/09/2022 15:54

How new are they?

XelaM · 28/09/2022 15:55

Oh, and she got free second hand white AF1 off a friend. She wears them all the time outside of school.

New ones would have looked just as worn in a few weeks

MarshaMelrose · 28/09/2022 15:57

You can get some great bargains on vinted. £114 for children's shoes is ridiculous. They don't look after them. This way there's so much less stress when he trashes them within the year.

Gracelynn · 28/09/2022 16:04

If the second hand ones are decent condition not un reasonable.

My youngest boy has his brother's old trainers, my youngest daughter has a freinds old shoes, kind of normal around here. My oldest son did often get new or more fitted shoes, due to some walking difficulties when he was younger. But by and large second hand is almost to be expected in our house new more of a treat.

latetothefisting · 28/09/2022 16:10

You sound a bit mean saying that he didn't look after them -trainers are meant to be heavily worn, they are rarely going to stay perfect after a year, and even if he had looked after them better it wouldn't have made any difference -his feet have grown (as teenagers do!) so he would still need a new pair, that's not his fault!

I would offer him whatever amount you can afford or are happy to spend - whether the cost of the 2nd hand pair, or slightly more for a new pair that aren't top of the range (there are loads of nike ones that arent af1s that are a third of the price and would still be acceptable to teens, its not like you're making him get unbranded from primark!) - then leave it up to him whether he wants to buy second hand, buy a cheaper pair new or save up for the af1s.

Paigeycakey · 28/09/2022 23:28

@latetothefisting my 7 year old is a size 6 in trainers! No pair of trainers would last the whole year. Perhaps OP is really struggling financially?

Chloefairydust · 29/09/2022 00:44

If the trainers are in good condition and very lightly worn I would say it’s ok.

I buy second hand stuff from eBay all the time and get really good deals on the brands I like. I look at the photos very closely and descriptions. Very often you can get stuff that’s new or only been worn once.

KeepOutingMyselfAnotherNameChange · 29/09/2022 01:15

Yabu op. Though my 15 year old is size 11 so I know the cost of trainers is expensive. Shoes do get ruined that's normal. I think I have a carers discount code for JD Sports if you want it.

So hang on are you saying OP is being unreasonable if she buys lightly used secondhand trainers but not if she uses a discount code meant for carers that you're willing to provide presumably having no idea if she is in fact a carer? Odd logic.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 29/09/2022 01:58

I bought mine a pair of dms off vinted that were hardly used. He didn't have a problem and I can't afford to pay £150 when his feet are still growing!

Amandasummers · 29/09/2022 03:08

Yanbu and I do the same for certain things. My 13 year old ruins everything he gets!

other option is buying fakes, depending on your feelings towards that! There’s a good Facebook group where you can get them from Turkey, arrive in about 2 weeks, £30max!

Oh, what's the Facebook group? My daughter wants Jordans for Christmas. Fake would be perfect

iratepirate · 29/09/2022 06:46

My DC have had almost exclusively second-hand things. I wouldn’t think twice about buying the eBay ones for him. They’re going to be worn out in the same amount of time anyway.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 29/09/2022 06:51

I'm not sure what the issue is here. How could you be unreasonable to buy something you need for a place that has it at a price you can afford?

What's the problem?

Reservoirbogs · 29/09/2022 07:01

Sorry but I think second hand shoes are akin to second hand underwear and no way would I expect my teen to wear used trainers, isn't that what child benefit is for, to help with things like shoes? If mine wants expensive ones he puts his own money towards them, does your ds not have any savings/birthday money and you can go halves?

Bytrgrewd · 29/09/2022 07:17

I’ve bought my teen a couple of pairs of airforce1s from Vinted and depop. Wouldn’t be able to afford them without buying second hand and he’d rather branded secondhand than cheap new!

Good shoes are important. Especially if the trainers are worn 5 days a week for school. Be careful!

Office have a website called Offcuts
Ex display shoes or returned shoes for discounts
