Surely they've got to? It's such a bloody mess. It's going to cost a fortune in increased borrowing costs on government debt given increases in bond yields.

Let alone the massive repercussions of Sterling tanking.

YANBU - The government will u turn and save us from their fuck up

YABU - nope we're screwed (unless you're rich)

I think the Mini-Budget change to UC and seeking further hours applies to some of the small amount of people that work 9-12hrs pw and don't have any additional responsibilities and/or needs.

In some areas there really isn't any more work available, unless you are suited to Social Care, so it would be up to the attitude of the Claimant's Job Coach as to how they treat each Claimant.

So for the poor bastards like me, Truss&Co's Risk shouln't make it much worse than we're already used to - it's the other not poor/not rich bastards that'll be feeling the uncertainty and pain that many of us already feel, hopefully not for too long eh, or they might burst....

Which bit do you want them to u-turn on? The 20% down to 19% basic tax rate? Labour have said they'd keep that.

You mean the scrapping of the 45% upper rate which brings us in line with Ireland?

Nat6999 · 28/09/2022 05:29

I'm hoping for a massive tantrum, stamping her feet & calling a general election.

DonnaBanana · 28/09/2022 06:33

Probably. The whole thing is ridiculous. Businesses can’t actually act upon the proposed tax cuts because they have no confidence they’ll actually still be in place when they need them, so why make any decisions based upon them now? Tax cuts will only affect decisions made a year or two down the line if they don’t take effect immediately..

I want them to heed the warning of the IMF and u turn on the package announced in the mini budget.

It's put labour in a difficult position. There's no way they'd propose tax cuts but equally they don't want to scare away voters.

I am a high earner but believe in paying more tax as I want to help those with less advantages than I. Charity doesn't bridge the gap and charity isn't going to pay for health and social care.
The 45% announcement was such an own goal. It's not even a high amount of revenue but psychologically the tories have spelt out that they are for the rich and against the poor!!

They fucking better had!

Unfortunately I doubt it. We're all pretty used to Boris U-turning but he was always very keen on doing what it took to stay in the role/ appeal to the masses (or at least enough of them to win elections). He went out of his way to appear a bit bumbling etc. Truss has set out from the start that she is intending to do things that are unpopular and seems to be trying to portray herself as a modern day Thatcher. So I'm pretty sure her stance will be 'the lady's not for turning' even when it's bloody obvious that she should u turn. I suspect she'd rather let the economy self destruct than be seen to admit she got it wrong. I suspect our only way out of this shit will be for her (and her crew) to be removed from office- probably by her own party. I wouldn't be surprised to find that Sunak was guiding some sort of push back behind the scenes

Nat6999 · 28/09/2022 22:44

Apparently Liz Truss is going to give a 5 minute interview on 8 BBC radio stations tomorrow, what's betting it is pre recorded so nobody can ask a question she doesn't want to answer?

Me too. I suspect we’ll be disappointed.
