Y7 Dts have come home with it from school today. I think it's entirely inappropriate - not the subject matter but the swearing, the cartoon style, it's not exactly English literature they have just turned 11.

The tv show is 14+

I don't want to be that one but it doesn't sit right at this age.

Any one any experience?

What on earth is with all these posts about Year 7 parents unable to cope with their children's schooling?

Get a grip. This will not be the worst thing he has or is going to see.

AriettyHomily · 27/09/2022 19:45

Oh I've got a grip. I just don't think it's appropriate for a just turned 11yo. Every page is fuck this fuck that.

Yo can't shield them from everything forever.

I watched "psycho" when I was 11. I'm fine.

What do you think is actually going to happen?

In that case you must have a very special edition of the graphic novel.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 27/09/2022 19:46

Really? - maybe I am immune to swearing but I think it’s a happy love story and accessible for a range of reading abilities.

WeAreAllLionesses · 27/09/2022 19:47

Have you read 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time'? Swearing does not make a book bad, you know.

FarmerRefuted · 27/09/2022 19:50

Bless your heart if you don't think 11yr olds learn All Of The Swears by the time they're in Year 7.

Have you actually read the book? It's a lovely story about inclusion, being happy, and sticking up for yourself and it's actually a pretty accurate representation of school life too.

FarmerRefuted · 27/09/2022 19:51

(Also graphic novels are just as valid as "literature" as classic novels, anything that gets kids reading is a good thing without snootiness about the format it's presented in)

JaninaDuszejko · 27/09/2022 19:51

It does have a lot of swearing in it (proud Alice Oseman fans in this house) but it's a realistic enough portrayal of 16 and 17 year olds. Your child is Y7, they are at secondary school. I hate to break it to you but they know all the swear words now.

AriettyHomily · 27/09/2022 19:56

Ffs I know they know the swear words, I just don't think it's appropriate for early y7, and yea it's a lovely sorry if inclusion and all that but the tv show is 14.

They're far from sheltered.

OP posts:
VeridicalVagabond · 27/09/2022 19:57

If you know they know the words and you agree it's a lovely story, why do you think it's inappropriate?

Florence777 · 27/09/2022 19:57

Why do you think it's inappropriate?

FarmerRefuted · 27/09/2022 19:58

The TV shoe is a separate entity to the book, the book is rated suitable for their age.

It's a KS3 text, your DC are KS3.

MrsMigginsCat · 27/09/2022 20:03

Provided they don't use the swear words they probably already know inappropriately then why does it matter if they read them in a book?

Emsypops · 27/09/2022 20:04

A year 7 child is fine to read this.

Nomorescreentime · 27/09/2022 20:06

The only issue you mentioned in your OP was the swearing. What else about the books did you find inappropriate when you read them?

gretr · 27/09/2022 20:07

So if your children know the swear words already, and your only concern is the swear words, I don’t really understand what your issue is?

Curioushorse · 27/09/2022 20:08

They are gorgeous. Delightful books.

....but I might pause in recommending them to a Year 7, unless I felt they were emotionally mature. They are still a bit primary school at this stage of the year.

Year 8 up, definitely.

I'm an English teacher, btw.

SugerNiner · 27/09/2022 20:11

My year nine daughter has been reading these since year 7. She says there's less swearing in the full book than you'd hear during one break time in school 🤣

donttellmehesalive · 27/09/2022 20:11

There seems to be a flurry of over-protective parents of Y7s today. OP, it's a KS3 text and entirely suitable. You can disagree but you can't stop the school from teaching an appropriate syllabus. Just relax and see what they learn from studying it. Show them that you trust them to respond to it in a mature way.

donttellmehesalive · 27/09/2022 20:12

Or i guess, if you feel very strongly, that there must be other schools.

Crazycrazylady · 27/09/2022 20:14

Op
If you feel that strongly just send a note in saying you do won't be reading it. Panic over.

Suzi888 · 27/09/2022 20:23

Guidance states 12-14 years.
I agree with you, to me it normalises swearing🤷🏼‍♀️

“They are gorgeous. Delightful books.” God help us.
