Lost money from a cash machine

I went to a cash machine today to take out £100. Nothing came out of it, but I could later see from my online account that the money has been taken. Have rang up the bank who have opened a dispute with the ATM operator but said this process can take up to 15 days.

I know I'm being unreasonable thinking mistakes can instantly be rectified, but I've got that horrible sick feeling in my stomach of being down £100 through no fault of my own with no guarantee of getting it back.

If the machine had CCTV, which most of them have, as well as other ways of checking, then you will get it back. Good luck.

Did you ring the number on the ATM? Some have the company on. For example I work at a supermarket, we can report issues like this to the atm company. Then it can be resolved and then we can call the customer with the complaint resolution or the company can

The machine will know if it's £100 up. Plus as PP says it should be monitored by CCTV. I'd be amazed if you don't get it back. Plus the 15 days is probably worse case scenario

A similar thing happened to me, but with £20. The bank refunded the money, so try not to worry.

I had this too. One of those machines in a shop. Was £120. I got it back within 48 hours

Happened to a friend I was shopping with once. We went straight into the bank and reported the mishap. They did chase it up immediately and the money was returned in a few days.

Ever since then I always use a cash machine attached to an actual open bank. You need a face to face interaction when you’re so supremely frustrated, irate and anxious!

Hope you’ll get your money back soon. (And that you’ll be ok without it in the meantime.)

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 27/09/2022 15:44

I left £50 in a machine once. I was cross with myself, and did not notify the bank, because it was entirely my mistake. Months later the money rematerialised in my account. It had obviously been sucked back into the machine, and at some point the bank had worked out why the machine was up £50.

Thanks, yes that's part of the problem I think, what if someone struggles with cash flow in the meantime? If someone had taken several hundred out (or whatever the maximum is for their bank) the assumption is they can cope easily without their money for up to 15 days. And if their claimed is then declined, they've lost it for good?

I got it sorted within a couple of days by contacting the bank and raising a complaint.

I had this years ago, tried to withdraw £20, didn't work and spat my card out, tried again, same happened, but when I checked my balance at another machine it had taken the £40 from my balance. I rang the bank and they investigated and gave me the money back pretty quickly. Hopefully will be the same for you.

When this happened to me on holiday in Wales i went into the nearest bank, they refunded me there and then but said if the dispute wasn't resolved they'd take the money back later. Few days later they called to say they'd got the money back from the cashpoint provider.

This happened to me in the eighties, when we had only just started using ATMs, it was £20, which was almost a weeks shopping for me then. I went into the bank immediately, but they said they had to wait until closing time to check, and more or less said it was not likely to be the machine at fault, it was in a nearby town and I couldn't get back there again that week, so I went to my own branch, who contacted them, the reply came back that there was no discrepancy. Luckily my local branch manager (a woman, which was quite unusual then) said it had happened to her too, athough the bank's line was that it could not happen, and paid the money back into my account. It was about 20 years before I ever used one again!
