We'll be better off losing many of our employment rights. This is what we voted for.

'Every effort is being made to expunge the concept of EU law, and its effect, from the British legal system. The year 2024 will be like a ‘Year Zero’ for rights derived from EU law.'
’This means that, unless preserved by specific regulations, protections such as TUPE, the Working Time Regulations, regulations protecting atypical workers (such as agency workers) and certain health and safety regulations, will potentially cease to apply. Various areas of protection from discrimination will also potentially cease to apply – such as some of the protections for equal pay for work of equal value. This includes not only where legislation was implemented under specific powers in the European Communities Act 1972, but also wherever legislation was introduced for the purpose of implementation of EU obligations – as was the case with some parental leave rights.'

'The Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Bill abolishes EU-derived workplace rights, with salvation only available at the whim of the new Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Jacob Rees-Mogg.'

There's so much apathy about this I can only assume most people are billionaire landed gentry who don't need wages.

ladygindiva · 26/09/2022 20:10

And that's why I voted to remain. Bah.

FreddyHG · 26/09/2022 20:11

Not that we need another Brexit thread but people voted for Brexit for a variety of reasons. For some it was about freedom of movement, others it was freedom to choose our own laws and diverge from Europe. The freedom to set our own path is great however the buck now stops at Westminster if they balls it up the buck stops with them. We can elect a new government in 2 years anyway.

I thought that but now I think they don't know. Stopping reading or watching news has meant I've missed any important info. Most of what is reported is not important. Stuff like this should be all over the media.

what's the deal in other EU countries - surely we will lose good workers who would rather work where they have rights and we'll end up with a sort of brain drain?

WhiteFire · 26/09/2022 20:21

Too many thought EU laws were about bendy bananas and prisoners playing on a x-box, there was a chronic lack of knowledge about the protections Joe Bloggs were offered and no-one on the remain side (as in those leading the campaign) made enough noise about it.

And so we are here.

Thelnebriati · 26/09/2022 20:29

We said human rights were under threat and we were told the UK is a bastion of rights and to stop spreading fear.

lannistunut · 26/09/2022 20:30

I'm pretty gutted about where the UK is headed. We need a new government so much, a bonfire of workers' rights is really the last thing we need.

Wanda616 · 26/09/2022 20:33

We were shouted down with cries of 'Project Fear' when we raised this.

It doesn't really matter why people voted for Brexit, because whatever their reason, this was always going to come bundled with it. Why do people think the rich and industry were so keen on Brexit? They couldn't exploit workers the way they wanted because of pesky EU rules and now they can do whatever the fuck they want. Kiss goodbye to sick pay, annual leave, maternity pay, employment tribunals and other worker protections.

We desperately need Labour to step up
surely they can't do a whole party conference without actually addressing all this?

it's like they are ignoring an unmanned goal.

Rachel Reeves talked about Brexit today and they have expressed their commitment tow rokers' rights with the policies of restricting zero hours contracts and enhancing rights.

*to workers'

Kendodd · 26/09/2022 20:40

I remember straight after the ref in 2016, I said to my husband that we should leave the country, he didn't want to. I think not pushing harder on that and getting my children out when we had the chance, is going to be one of my biggest regrets in life.

Thing is, even if labour get in and do that, the Tories will just take them away first chance they get. We have no long term protection.

Exactly. It won't stop the whining about how disappointing the Labour Party apparently is though.

I was a remainer and am an even more ardent remainer now, but can't argue with this. Our lives are in our hands and we can now vote for workers rights and environmental protections. The fact we won't though, is horrible.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 26/09/2022 20:49

I wish that we could have a two-tiered system, where those who voted to stay in the EU could keep our old EU rights, and those who vote to leave could enjoy their shiny new ones.

Tigofigo · 26/09/2022 20:53

Not much more depressing than a Victorian ghost with awful views towards equality for women being in charge of workplace rights.

Along with the govt working towards restricting strike action, protest, etc the UK is becoming closer to a regressive, fascist state every day.

Thelnebriati · 26/09/2022 21:00

I'm glad I'm not the only one that can see it. We've had a decade of austerity, a loss of faith in the political system, and we're heading towards a bad winter where possibly a third of the population will be in food and fuel poverty. I'm very worried.

Yes, me too. Remainers could have workers rights and leavers could swim in the shit in the sea.

bit harsh

a bit like me saying I’d like lockdown supporters to be banned from doing anything forever. Or getting anything delivered.

Then again, I would genuinely like to give them compulsory national service supporting essential jobs eg refuse collection, food production. And They might learn something.
