To stand on road to stop parents parking illegally

Parking at our primary school has been hazardous for years. There is a crossing guard on the main road at the school gates but not on a side road lots of kids have to cross. Parents park on the double yellow lines at the junction of the side road blocking lines of site for pedestrians and cars trying to turn in and out. This often results in the road getting blocked and cars reversing back on to main road.
School sends repeated communication to parents without impact and has asked local authority for bollards and this is under consideration but hasn’t happened yet.

I used to collect my DC from the gate because of the risks but DC wants to be more independent and meet me further away.

I started asking parents not to park and the junction but have been largely ignored so I have started standing on the edge of the road to prevent people parking and this has been effective.
Today someone I know signalled to me to move but I smiled and shook my head and they had to park a few metres down the street . They are not happy with me.

AIBU to block the road?

Can the school buy some cones to put out ?

Grumpybutfunny · 26/09/2022 15:54

Yes you are being unreasonable who blocks a road, teach your kid to walk further down and cross. If someone hits you I imagine you would be found liable.

Everydaywheniwakeup · 26/09/2022 15:54

The entitled fuckers would probably just run you over.

AloysiusBear · 26/09/2022 15:54

They can't park there anyway so you are not "blocking" it.

CatLadyDrinksGin · 26/09/2022 15:54

It’s the same at every school in the country and is a problem that you won’t solve. Some parents are lazy and selfish.

AloysiusBear · 26/09/2022 15:55

(I assume you are allowing normal traffic to pass but not park)

Wrong. Pedestrians always have right of way over vehicles.

AloysiusBear · 26/09/2022 15:56

I dunno, if her standing there means cars can't park there sounds pretty much like problem solved to me.

CatfordMouse · 26/09/2022 15:56

YANBU. Could the school get some cones to put up? The primary schools round here that aren't school streets (where they close to cars) have no parking cones or A boards that get put out in the morning and afternoon to stop exactly this.

ChimneyPot · 26/09/2022 15:58

AloysiusBear · 26/09/2022 15:55

Oh yes completely. There is room to drive past in both directions.
I am only stopping people parking on the double yellow.

This. No one can park there so why can't she stand there? Lazy, entitled wankers.

They’re not meant to be parking there. It’s too close to a junction.

"found liable" for what?

What a totally batshit post.

She is standing at the edge which is already marked with yellow zig zags which mean no parking. People parking on the zigzags makes it unsafe to cross

Dixiechickonhols · 26/09/2022 15:59

Local school to me has yellow boards they put out - parking here is endangering children’s lives

No pedestrian is ever found liable for being hit by a car, unless they jump out at a moments notice, or indeed jump on a car on purpose.

Do any of these signs work, those that do

deviatedseptum · 26/09/2022 16:00

Have you thought about volunteering or getting a job? You sound very invested

FixItUpChappie · 26/09/2022 16:01

What are you going to stand there every day? Then cars will park there as soon as you leave or stop doing it. What is it really fixing 🤷‍♀️. School needs to push council for signs, cones and enforcement. Can you teach your child to cross elsewhere? Your not wrong per se but I doubt you’ll get the response you want.

Sorry for the drip feed.
There is no footpath on the other side of the side road so pedestrians can’t walk down a bit to cross safely. There is a footpath on the main road and on the side of the side road I stand on.

The parents parking dangerously outside DDs primary drives me mad. Its their own kids they are putting at risk, I don't understand it! On double yellows, on pavements, blocking the fire exit of a local business, the Lollipop lady has been driven at, on grass verges, across driveways.

CatfordMouse · 26/09/2022 16:02

Nsky62 · 26/09/2022 16:00

They do round there because they are put on the edge of the road so in the way for parking.

girlmom21 · 26/09/2022 16:02

I wouldn't intentionally aggravate people who are already driving irresponsibly where there are lots of young children, to be honest.

It might be better to start a petition to get the bollards approved sooner.

Imagine being invested in the safety of your child and their friends.

Flyingwithoutwing · 26/09/2022 16:04

I know of a primary where a child was hit by a car while walking around a car parked illegally. You stand your ground. The selfish wankers who want to park there can f-off.
