Loft insulation

have you seen a significant change in energy bills from having the loft insulated? who did you get to do it (most local companies on checkatrade seem to only do spray foam insulation which creates problems with mortgage lenders and handymen don’t seem to list it as a service).

I live in a 3 bed middle terrace which gets unbearably hot in the summer so DH is a bit worried about house getting even hotter if the loft is insulated.

Watching with interest as we are considering insulation in the loft - but I think insulating it should reduce the temperature in the summer, rather than increase it (most of the heat in the loft in summer comes from the sun, rather than the air).
We also don’t want spray foam, so are plan ing to use 4” celotex with foil on both faces on the roof tile underside, then clad this over to make the loft a cleaner storage space…

Can't answer thefirst part of your question from personla experience, but they reckon about a quarter of your home's heat is lost through the roof if it's uninsulated, so it should make a significant difference.

For the second part of your question - insulating the roof will stop your house getting so hot in the summer (as a lot of the heat in your house comes from the roof absorbing the sun's heat), so it's a win win.

I've just done our loft myself, used Thermal wrap for the rafters, and put down the fluffy stuff over the joists. Put risers in over the joists to put in a floor. Couldn't get a company to do it as there is no way on earth I could clear out the loft fully. Ours is 4 bed semi d, and cost about £600 to do, but I got half the stuff from B&Q before I realised the builders suppliers was about a third cheaper. According to the Thermal wrap it keeps cool in summer.

I would think your house would get hotter, heat rises and it can't escape if it can't get through the insulation surely

We had ours done in May, didn’t feel like it contributed to the heat over the summer, and already we can feel the house is warmer as the weather is turning a bit colder. Previously we had about 1/4 of the recommended depth of insulation and bedrooms were freezing in winter. Hoping will see warmer bedrooms and a reduction in energy bills this winter.

Thanks all. We only plan to live here for the next 3 years then sell so trying to weigh up if we will get back what we put in. With energy bills going up it probably will be worth it.

I can’t find a trader who does traditional insulation! What would you search for… a handyman? builder?
