Explain a cappuccino to me?

Purchased cappuccino this morning. Walk away holding it thinking hmmm this cup is so light- feels like barely anything in there. But baby in the other arm grumpy and ready to go, no time to check / go back.

4mins later get home to open the lid- less than half of the cup is filled with liquid. Now I've purchased cappuccinos before and don't ever remember it being like this or am I stupid??? I hadn't even drank any of it yet.

YABU- over half of the cup in cappuccinos is meant to be just foam

YANBU- there's supposed to be more of the coffee in there and less foam!

Also, it pretty much tasted like a black coffee with barely any milk in. Grumpy Monday morning for me. Was looking forward to a nice takeaway coffee rather than making one at home.

Because a latte is a really milky coffee. A flat white is less volume altogether. What I want is a long drink with some cold milk. Not steamed milk or a large proportion of milk. So that would be an Americano with milk!

I’m the opposite! I love an Americano. I love a latte or flat white, but I really dislike black coffee (either filter of Americano) with a splash of milk.

You carried it for too long so the foam melted. Cappuccino is more foam if you want a long milky coffee you want a latte

Impossible
If the cup is too light and empty of milk, the milk can't evaporate into nothing. There was too much foam and not enough milk.

This. That is how I was trained

This is how I was trained too.

Cappuccino is always my drink of choice. When it's served in a proper cup, the liquid always reaches nearly to the top and the foam comes up and over.
I never, ever get a takeaway cappuccino as it always comes as yours did. I have no idea why it's a good amount in a proper cup and all foam when it's takeaway, but that is the reality. Takeaway cappuccino is a waste of money.

georgarina · 28/09/2022 15:39

Yeah, this is why I never order takeaway lattes or cappuccinos.
I always used to order 'light on the foam' which was usually slightly better but still made me feel like I was paying for a cup of air.

Slightly off topic but I never understand why people ask for an Americano with milk? I always thought an Americano was a black coffee, espresso topped up with hot water. If you want white coffee why don't you ask for a flat white or a latte?

Not the end of the world I know but it always puzzles me.

I tend to ask for an Americano with hot milk. More volume than a flat white. More flavour than a latte. And definitely more substance than a cappuccino.

I've gone from never drinking coffee to being a cappuccino snob within about 2 years! 😂

We've got a lovely independent place near my work who make an excellent one. I have to walk past the terribleness that is Costa and Cafe Nero to get to it, but it's far superior!

At home, the best thing I've ever bought is an electric milk frother like this - Asda link. I spent much more on mine than this, and mine only makes hot milk, but the next one I'm getting will do cold too for milkshakes!

I have a dolce gusto machine, so make an espresso sized shot of Barista coffee then top up with the milk. With my frother, if you pour it instantly you get a mix of foam and milk. If you let it settle for 10-15 seconds you get warm milk and froth separately, to the point you have to spoon it on.

When either my coffee machine breaks, or I re-do my kitchen, whichever comes first, I will invest in a proper coffee machine to make my own from ground coffee.

I ask for a filter coffee with milk, but an Americano with milk is acceptable. I don't want heated milk in my coffee because I want to drink it NOW not in ten minutes!

Also lattes are too milky for me.

Angelofthenortheast · 28/09/2022 17:14

The difference between making cappuccino big foam and latte little foam is how close you hold the milk jug to the steam spout.

The barista just hasn't got the knack yet. They just charged you for milky air

Paigeycakey · 28/09/2022 17:18

£2.70 is very cheap for a cappuccino try a different shop next time.

Angelofthenortheast · 28/09/2022 17:18

@DoraSpenlow i think latte and flat white are both cups of milk with a shot of espresso. Americano is a cup of water with espresso. And for some crazy reason, people in this country have gotten used to swirling a tablespoon of milk into their water 🙃

marmitegirl01 · 28/09/2022 17:19

My coffee order is a soya latte. Extra hot & wet … usually gets a raised eyebrow 🤣

It was actually an independent, and yes £2.70 was cheap compared to the coffee shop I usually go to, but expensive for 1/3 cup of coffee😂

I've had to give asking for an Americano now because of the questions about milk. Or worse, just adding milk anyway. I resort to just asking for a black coffee

MiseryWIthAStent · 29/09/2022 13:35

Cappuccino is a small latte. That's what it was when I was a barista for the national trust anyway 😅 maybe it's changed since then.

Floydthebarber · 29/09/2022 19:59

Oooh, I never go back to threads to disagree (apart from the M&S one with the perfect pairings!) but a cappuccino is not a small latte. A latte is steamed milk with a bit of foam, a cappuccino is steamed milk but with far more foam.
