To have a 5 year old sleep on the top bunk?

considering bunk beds, I have a 9 and 5 year old. 9 year old has sen and also sleep walks so definitely can't go on the top bunk.
5 year old is very sensible and very aware of his surroundings when he's sleeping he's not really a deep sleeper.
I know it's supposed to be 8 but does anyone have 5 year old in a top bunk and they manage ok or is it too risky?

My DD slept on the top bunk at a similar age. Younger sibling was too young and there was no other way of getting beds in rooms. She was fine.

Not quite the same but DS has been in a mid sleeper since 6 (recommended age) with no issues. Just make sure you get a guard rail.

I slept on a top bunk at that age, and so did DS1. I think it is fine. I assume the bunk has a small barrier to stop them rolling out?

My 6yo has been sleeping on the top bunk for a couple of years with no issues. Until the other day, when he fell onto his head and vomited. Hours in A&E, fortunately he's fine if possibly concussed.

I wouldn’t do this. My friend has a big scar from falling off the top bunk at a similar age. It isn’t just night time either, it’s playing up there in the day etc.

My 5 year old sleeps on top bunk as the toddler is to little has done since she was 4 no issue she knows the rules and saftey and there's a baby monitor in there anyway for the toddler

Does he get up in the night much? I would let me 5 yo other than the fact he gets up every night. He would be totally fine the rest of the time, but I don't really trust him navigating a ladder half asleep in the mdidle of the night.

As long as it has a safety barrier, and they are sensible, I don't see a problem. My DS has slept on a top bunk with a normal safety barrier to stop him rolling off, since he was 5.

Depends on whether he is quite active at night

Mine when they were 5 id not be comfortable with it, as they got up a lot for the loo, and id not be comfortable them navigating the steps/ladder when groggy at that age.

I think 5 is too young personally. Id be worried of them slipping/falling out at night. Maybe closer to 8/9

gogohmm · 26/09/2022 12:04

Mine did from 5, never heard of 8!

My 4 year old has just gone into a bunk bed, albeit slightly lower than a usual one as the bottom bed is on the floor. She doesn’t play up there and only goes up at bedtime but can get up and down independently if she needs a wee.
It depends on the child.
