To take my toddler's liquid Neurofen at a pinch

SherbettingSherbert · 25/09/2022 22:09

My back is killing me tonight! Usually it's stress or picking up DC related and just 1 ibuprofen is usually plenty to help me ease off to sleep and rest enough to feel better by dawn.

...However, just found out DP has used them all for his hangover a couple of days back! Confused

BUT, just found DC's Neurofen for children bottle during the cupboard raid.

Says 1x 5ml spoon = 100mg so 2 spoonfuls should do the trick.

Just sense checking there isn't some obvious red flag I'm missing in my eagerness to get to sleep!

Thank you

Don’t see why not although I’m not convinced it’ll work.

I wish they made calpol for adults…

Cabbagesoup77 · 25/09/2022 22:13

Should be fine.

Donttakeafence · 25/09/2022 22:13

Well I can confirm that calpol works very well and quickly for migraines (on holiday once with a full pharmacy for DC but nothing for me), and nurofen liquid capsules are amazing for tonsillitis (but so expensive) so I can’t see why you couldn’t tbh.

Battlecat98 · 25/09/2022 22:13

It's fine. we use it at work for adults (NHS) just work out the correct dose. Liquid is supposed to be quicker acting. Hope it works.

QueenOfHiraeth · 25/09/2022 22:13

It'll be fine. Your reasoning is right

Miffee · 25/09/2022 22:14

When my kids were little the painkiller suspensions had adult dosages on them. They work just the same, adults do use them for a number of reasons. Particularly adults with an LD.

Yes OP it's fine and it will work just as well.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 25/09/2022 22:14

It’ll be fine 2-4 5ml spoons will be the adult dose

SherbettingSherbert · 25/09/2022 22:14

@PearlLennox frankly I'll happily take the placebo effect right now

It's fine, I've used calpol lots of times for migraines when I've run out!

MrsAvocet · 25/09/2022 22:15

The normal adult dose for ibuprofen is 400mg so you'd need 4 spoonfuls for that, but there's absolutely no reason why it wouldn't work.
I've used calpol when I've run out of paracetamol before now. Admittedly you need a big volume, especially if it's the 120mg/5ml concentration and its disgustingly sickly, but it works - the active ingredients are just the same in the children's versions.
Get well soon!

SherbettingSherbert · 25/09/2022 22:16

Perfect, thank you all for the input. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything obvious.
If all goes well I will be very quickly disappearing off this chat and off to sleep
...fingers crossed...

Use an online dosing calculator for your weight and strength of liquid. Useful for DC who are taller/heavier than average too.

Blocked · 25/09/2022 22:19

My DH does this. Drives me fucking nuts, 2 ibuprofen costs about 5p, but he uses up the kids £5 a bottle nurofen and then there isn't any when they get a temperature in the night.

It's exactly the same stuff as in adult tablets except at a lower dose and in liquid form so if the OP takes 2 x 5ml spoonful's she will still be getting the equivalent of 1 200mg tablet. Calpol is just liquid paracetamol, there is no reason why the correct dose of liquid paracetamol (4 x 5mls spoonfuls of 6+ calpol) would be any less efficient than the same dose of the tablet form (2 x 500mg tablets). DH was prescribed it recently and it worked well for him.

Vintagevixen · 25/09/2022 22:32

We use Calpol or liquid brufen/nurofen all the time for patients with feeding tubes if they can't swallow. It's exactly the same stuff but in suspension, just follow the dosing instructions on the packet.

PearlLennox · 25/09/2022 22:34

…why has this never occurred to me before 🤯

Finally, i can validly consume half a bottle of calpol.

EvilRingahBitch · 25/09/2022 22:35

Yes the only reason why adults shouldn't take it is that it costs an arm and a leg at adult dosages. But if you're in pain and there's no tablets in the house then that's not the main issue.

WingingIt101 · 25/09/2022 22:51

I had a really terrible bug a few years back that meant I could barely swallow and ended up in out of hours for the pain - the doctor said just to take paracetamol and ibuprofen on top of the medicine they prescribed... when I said there was no way I could swallow a tablet he said "oh just get calpol and kiddie nurofen and dose up to the adult dose!!

I got through loads of the stuff!

AriettyHomily · 25/09/2022 22:52

Crack on, I've never understood taking one ibuprofen / paracetamol so it can't be that bad. Just dose up.

squealornosqueal · 25/09/2022 23:21

I was taking two 400mg ibuprofen a while back in error 😬

had the shits but the pain was gone

Pinkkahori · 25/09/2022 23:25

I can't swallow tablets. I find liquid Nurofen great for headaches. It's expensive but my only option really if I need ibuprofen.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 25/09/2022 23:48

Liquid painkiller is sometimes the only way I can combat the nausea section of a migraine.

I buy generic paracetamol and ibuprofen, and keep a bottle of each in the house.

I hope you feel better soon.

Fefifobum · 26/09/2022 01:07

I have Achalasia and it’s a nightmare taking tablets so on the odd occasion I need to take ibuprofen I take the Nurofen kids orange one.
I usually buy mine from Savers £2.49 last time I looked. Great for migraines too!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 26/09/2022 08:36

I've used calpol before and I can see why kids like it Grin

IncyWincyGrownUp · 26/09/2022 10:48

I miss medised to be fair, it was a blessing for migraines.
