to think reducing trade barriers and making it easier for UK firms to trade with the EU will help growth

Liz Truss wants economic growth.

If we made it easier to trade with the EU, instead of the barriers companies face now and the bureaucracy companies face, it would be so much easier and better for UK growth.

We don't need to rejoin the EU but do need to work much more closer with the EU on reducing trade barriers even more

Like rejoin the single market?
Bring it on!

That’s what the EU was. Apparently we don’t need free access to a massive trading block on our doorstep. What we need is things measured in pounds and ounces and to turn The City into a tax haven.

Testina · 25/09/2022 19:08

I deal with the barriers a lot and have personally seen paid work move from the U.K. to EU because of it, and U.K. contracts lost.
Yes, we should ask the EU very nicely if we can buy our way back into the freedom of movement of goods. However, we’re so used to spending our extra millions on the NHS, who will find it hard to give that money up…

Fear not, The truss has a plan to reduce the regulations on business, which will have the affect of making it harder for them to do business with the EU. Marvellous.

And blue passports. Be fair, list all the positives!

So leaving the largest trading bloc where we had our special terms means we can now trade with them if only we can simplify the arrangements that didn't exist before we left.

Flyingwithoutwing · 25/09/2022 19:15

Yup. The whole point of the single market is that all goods are made to the same standards, so you know that a single market child car seat will be adequately tested at.

GB decided to leave the single market, and as we have not signed up to the EU standards every single good we are shipping to the EU needs to be checked. The EU no longer trusts us to have goods that are of sufficient standards. This checking takes time and money and is suffocating our trade with the EU.

why did we leave the single market? Rich Tories wanting to import cheap chlorinated chicken from America would be have anything to do with it??? Nononono! The

Northern Ireland protocol is a means of ensuring these substandard UK goods don’t cross into the Republic of Ireland, putting all of the checking in the North Sea rather than on a border in Ireland. The Tories still think that they can drop the protocol, ignore the checking and ship dodgy goods into Ireland and the EU will be ok with that. They won’t. They want goods of a high standard, and want us to fuck off with our chlorinated chicken. I don’t blame them.

could we please just sign back up to the EU standards and rejoin the single market. It just makes so much more sense!

Well, it seems that more immigration is back on the cards as there are not enough people available to work now as a lot of people have become 'economically inactive'.

To all those still moaning - Brexit is done. Being salty about it won’t change the result. Let go of the resentment. It’s not healthy. Speaking as someone who voted remain, it’s time to move on.

OP, you are not wrong. We need to open up our economy. But Nimbys will always complain. And yes that means more immigration. Low skilled workers are needed because our broken welfare system simply disincentivises people from working by subsidizing low wages. And high skilled because we have not been training people in STEM. Without the latter, we will have nothing to trade with the rest of the world.

Yes, Brexit is done...but there are still ways we can trade with the EU with fewer barriers.

Easier trading, more growth

As someone who deals with the aftermath of Brexit professionally, and just last week had 2 extra long days because of a new issue, I absolutely reserve the right to still moan about it! It’s not “unhealthy” to say to my husband, “fucking Brexit” as I log off 3 hours after hours to let off some steam. I’m not screwing up my mental health with some burning resentment - I’m justifiably moaning! I can deal with it and move on with what we need to do at work (I’m actually bloody loving it personally as fire fighting unexpected

Testina · 25/09/2022 19:51

unexpected shit is fun 🤣) whilst still throwing out a “FFS Brexit!” when I need to!

Grantanow · 25/03/2023 09:14

If you want to crash the UK economy re-elect the Tories. They have a good track record of achievement in this. If they were to bring back BoJo and make the ERG MPs Ministers how could they possibly fail? I'm sure Truss would be available for a key post.
