To wonder which of your appliances are really worth it?

Just got given an air fryer from a friend who didn’t get on with it.

Which of your small appliances would you definitely replace if it broke, and which would you not bother? (or have given away?)

I love my…

Soda-stream - my little luxury. I love sparkling water and don’t want to drag it home or use the plastic.

Halogen oven/air fryer (seem the same to me so far) for cooking small portions quickly and cheaply as we are such a small household.

Microwave. Use it all the time. Porridge, milk for lattes, reheating soup, defrosting bread rolls, heating up batch cooks and leftovers. Do almost all my daily cooking in it.

Bread maker. I make pizza dough every Friday. I don’t make much bread all the way in it, because children don’t chew, but I would for just me.

Boiling water tap. Love it. Had it off for the summer, and really missed it, even though I don’t use if for tea or coffee! Would never bought one (was here when we moved) but wouldn’t like to be without it now.

I worship my dishwasher. Worship it. If it breaks the kitchen is closed until it’s fixed.

I love my side and hide oven. I’m short so reaching over the oven door is awkward and theres a constant risk of nipple-burns.

Meh….

Instant pot. Dunno why I bought it really. Use it for dog food or stock, but I don’t much bother with them these days. Does do nice porridge overnight, the occasional steamed pudding or Dulce du leche. Relegated to the garage. No time for a slow cooker either. Everything tastes weird from them. Gave it away.

Toaster. Useful for my kid, but I hardly ever eat toast and can do it under the grill if I do. They make such a mess!

Tassimo. Love my coffee, but the pods are SO expensive, unnecessary plastic and you’re very restricted on coffee brands. Will replace with bean-to-cup or nespresso with refillable pods (or generic ones. Nespresso pods seem so much more widely made) when I can.

Soup-maker. I like it, and I make a lot of soup, at least twice a week, but the convenience of making it in one step doesn’t outweigh the faff of getting it out, and cleaning and putting it away after, or the space it takes up (it seems huge for it’s capacity) over a pan and a stick blender. Toying with giving it away anyway.

Kenwood chef Not sure here. The mixer is RUBBISH and the food processor isn’t great either. But the attachments like the mincer, sieve and juicer are brilliant. I only use them for huge jobs a few times a year, though.

Hob. Dunno about doing without, but a single ring would do me nowadays. I don’t use it more than a couple of times a week. My kid does, for pasta, fried eggs and pancakes. I wouldn’t rush to replace it if it broke.

American fridge freezer. Big for just two us, although the space is nice, I think it’s really expensive to run. I love the ice/water dispenser and you can’t get them in single fridges. It’s quite a lot of space and cost for nice water, though. I’d look for a stand alone water dispenser first, I think.

Tumble dryer and dishwasher I cannot live without.

My airfryer was put in a cupboard about 2 years ago after only being used a few times. After reading about how much an oven is going to cost to run now, I took it out recently and use it everyday. It's actually quite good and quick for lunch stuff I'd normally put in the oven like falafel and veggie burgers.

Cordless hoover. Could not imagine using a corded vacuum now.
Microwave and dishwasher essential
Hair straighteners

Really want a coffee maker but get overwhelmed looking at the choices so just give up and continue using my cafetiere. Would need one that takes oat milk and does a good latte.

Interesting about the air fryers. Only two of us here and sometimes I'm heating the ovenup just for a couple of Sausages. Maybe i should look at a fryer.

Feelinglow27 · 25/09/2022 22:41

Oh and hand stick blenders for soup and sauce also essential

My Nespresso!

Kettle, toaster, washing machine, dishwasher, microwave and fridge. Could probably make do with a stove top kettle. Some sort of blender as well. Currently have a wand blender and nutribullet as the foodprocessor broke. Seem to be able to cope with those two.

FindingMeno · 25/09/2022 22:43

Don't care about dishwashers or slow cookers/ rice makers/ coffee machines etc.
I do like an oven and hob, fridge freezer, kettle and toaster. I can do what I need to.

chopc · 25/09/2022 22:47

@Eeksteek interesting that you think you can do without your hob

Longdistance · 25/09/2022 22:52

My microwave. We bought it in Oz and it’s a flat plate. It’s very good, if that goes it’s getting replaced immediately. It makes cracking baked potatoes.

We really love our toastie maker. It’s a Salter one. If that goes kaput, it’s getting replaced asap.

midsomermurderess · 25/09/2022 22:57

My Miele Cat and Dog vacuum cleaner. I bought cheap for years, despite having two cats, and one day I saw the light. It has mighty suction power and it's only a small one. I love it!

I dunno about do without completely. But we have months away in our camper with a single induction, and it’s fine. We eat the same as at home. I don’t fry meat or veg, steak, bacon, mushrooms etc go in the halogen oven (which I take with us). Every couple of months I batch cook a chilli or spaghetti bolognese or make jam or something (which could go in the instant pot) and once in a blue moon I do a cheese toastie or French toast, but really rarely. My kid uses it most days for scrambled or boiled eggs and pancakes, though. If it went, I’d be totally ok with a single induction instead of the massive 900mm neff thing I have! I can’t recall ever using multiple rings on it in three years. It’s just not how I personally cook these days. I microwave veggies (and buy in mash) so even if I do cook meat, fish or stir fry on it, it’s a one pan thing. I was just pondering that it takes up a massive amount of space and I use it maybe once a week, if that.

Need the freezers, fridges, ovens, hob, electric kettle, microwave, toaster, slow cooker, food processor, stick blender, vacuums etc.

Could do without the bread maker and tumble dryer.

Ninja Foodie Max Airfryer/Slow cooker/bake/steam etc
Had it about a month now. Use it loads, primarily for roast potatoes, chips, small pizzas, garlic bread. Absolutely love it, so much quicker. Very easy to clean. Eldest LOVES roast potatoes, I can whip them up for him in 20 minutes, so much easier and quicker than the oven, and hopefully cheaper. He probably has roast potatoes three times a week. I will start doing some slow-cooking things too once the weather turns.

Nutribullet Juicer
I juice every few days, doing enough to last me on the days that I don't juice. I have definitely noticed the difference in my health (energy, skin, waistline). Would not be without it.

Nutribullet Blender
Used every few days for smoothies for the kids. Quick, easy way to get nutrients into them.
Used weekly for blending pancake/waffle mixture to a perfect consistency.

Toasted sandwich maker/waffle maker (cheap own-brand from Lidl or Aldi – absolutely brilliant)
Used pretty much daily for toasted sandwiches, used weekly for weekend waffles.

Toaster
Daughter prefers plain toast or crumpets to the toasted sandwich maker offerings.

Barely use the main oven. Hob maybe every other day, but I might try using it less if I can do more in the Ninja Foodie (still learning).

Don't use the kettle (I'm the only adult in the house, I don't drink tea or coffee.). Might need to use it for hot water bottles once winter hits. Or is it cheaper to boil water in the pan on a gas hob?!

Don't own a microwave or dishwasher, or anything coffee-related.

Fridge is too small. I'd definitely make good use of a double-door version, but sadly no space. I'd really love a big freezer too.

Washing machine combo dryer. Mostly don't have it on the drying spin, except for towels once a week. Could do without the dryer, but it does save the house looking like a laundry when I do the big towel wash.

Heated clothes horse. Absolutely brilliant. Tend not to use it over the summer.

What one do you have? Our downstairs toilet is freezing and no way to heat it so this could be amazing for us!
