Toddle speech: talking nonsense

Hi

my son is just over 3 and has had a mild to moderate speech delay of about 6 months (seen by a speech therapist at 2.5 years old). He’s made progress since and can follow instructions, has a decent vocabulary, can put together 3/4/5 word sentences, however unless he needs something his speech/observations often don’t make sense eg the orange car jump jump we eat it or the cat in your tea? To some extent I think this is normal as my two year old who is an advanced talker says random things but no where near as much as my son does. I feel like my sons peers are making more sense and I can’t find much online about this so thought I’d ask here. Not sure if it’s just the delay persisting? Or maybe it is normal for some kids at the age of 3? Anyone experienced anything similar?

Does he talk like this when he is playing with his toys? If so I wouldn't worry about it as what's wrong with making 'the orange car jump'!!! A lot of jargon is common when they are talking as they play. If he is trying to communicate with you and still not making sense then I would perhaps ask for another assessment with the speech and language therapist. It's a good sign that he can follow instructions well though.

My eldest didn’t talk “properly” until he was 4.5. He rarely shuts up these days - I don’t think it’s jibberish - but it could be - endless drivel about Minecraft. 😉

Turns out everything went in… 😳

Have you asked him what he means
Tbh the fact he's made so much progress is good ,small children don't always make sense to adults ,but what he is saying probably makes sense to him.

Most of the time it’s when he’s playing with toys but he is also saying it to me or other people as well and they’ll often ask me to tell them what he’s saying. By comparison my two year old daughter will only really say random stuff when playing

He’s not great at answering questions so if I ask him to explain what he’s saying, how his day was at nursery, what he ate for lunch etc he won’t give me a clear answer.

The types of questions he can answer are: what would like to do eat/do? what colour is that? where is x y z? Also able to follow most two steps instructions. Just a few examples but I feel like the understanding is there.

I think trying to explain what he's saying or how his day has been at nursery is quite an ask for a child of just over 3 years so I wouldn't worry too much. What he can answer and understand sounds appropriate for his age. If you are still concerned though I'd ask for a reassessment.

@WhenIgrowolder thanks, that’s helpful to know!
