Does anyone know what’s going on?

I don’t know enough about Chinese politics to understand the implications but anything that destabilises things at the moment makes me jumpy. Can anyone explain

Yeah. I think I will. I need to breathe and stay off twitter

I don't 'use' Twitter. Too much absolute crap & too many bellends! I'd lose my temper FAR too quickly & probably be banned in a day. Various friends send amusing posts & cat pictures, so it's all good.

do yourself a favour and stay away from it.

sadly I don't think the BBC is what it used to be for reliable news, but it's probably the best we have, plus MN & I think everything gets covered!

try to sleep! Worrying won't change anything, anyway.

My brother lives there I will try to find out. But they do shut the internet down at times of perceived unrest

I know they are in the middle of a property crisis which will no doubt eventually affect us but not sure about house arrests

Icecreamandapplepie · 25/09/2022 00:44

Rumours are all over Google!!
Interesting...

If it’s on India media, it’s probably untrue. Their media is a bit hysterical and biased, since they have don’t get on with China. That said, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility if a transfer of power is going on. It’s a communist authoritarian state after all. They wouldn’t have open elections. And even in communist systems, dissent is sometimes hard to crush.

In general though, China has been locking down its people in a really bizarre way even now that western countries have moved on from the fashionable Covid hysteria. That has been putting pressure on the Chinese economy, but suppressing Oil prices at the same time as manufacturing consumption is low. At the same time the Evergrande scandal threatens to take sink the Chinese Real Estate market. People are simply refusing to pay for properties which they believe to be worthless. China’s property market has been the real hallmark of it’s de-facto capitalist status. And now that seems in danger. All in all, any major players with a stake in Chinese economy cannot be happy about all of this. Maybe the big players decided this cannot be allowed to go on.

Dibbydoos · 25/09/2022 01:17

The latest I can find is a person in tge know is stating that if no news from China itself, its likely to be untrue.

Shame though. The PLA is seeking a faurer society.

There is significant unrest in China, HK especially and the military circling Taiwan is def not good.

CJsGoldfish · 25/09/2022 02:12

It does look like it might be fake news but it seems to have spread massively on social media
Which is how fake news is spread. You've become a cog in that wheel by posting something you could not verify. Tin foil nuts won't care about that, they will now continue to spread it

i should stay off the bloody internet
Yes you should. Or at least be a lot little more responsible, hey?

catgirl1976 · 24/09/2022 23:58

Ok thank you

Sorry. I’m struggling with anxiety around all this. DH has been exasperatedly telling me to turn Twitter off and wait for proper news if it exists.

No disrespect intended here but why on earth do you care!? Are you in China?

wombat1a · 25/09/2022 04:52

If there has been a coup then it's bad news for anyone, Mr Xi is one of the most powerful leaders that place has had in the last 30 years, he has even started to rewrite the constitution there all allow him to 'rule' for his entire life rather than 2x 4yr spells. For someone to overthrow him with that much power and influence they must be really something special - and that is worrying because it means military - although the CCP essentially sees the military as their personal property anyway and not 'the countries'.

Xi needs to be taken down, he is bad news but it needs to be via a people's protest and his replacement in a peaceful way not in a coup.

Towcat15 · 25/09/2022 07:24

Twitter has a lot to answer for 🙄

You think a displacing a leader through protest in a communist state would be more peaceful than a military coup?

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 25/09/2022 00:04

Catgirl didn't. She asked a question, she didn't state it WAS happening.

By asking here if the fake twitter news was real is adding weight to it. Her DH had already told her she was spiralling, she couldn't find anything else to back it up so she posted here.

This is how fake news gets an air of respectability.

justasking111 · 25/09/2022 11:58

Well we can't do anything about it Xi is doing a Putin cementing his place as leader, amending the constitution sentencing ministers to death, he's Mao Mark II there's bound to be some twitching in China seeing a budding unstoppable dictator. They maybe clipping his wings.

Or there was a covid outbreak they go bat shit when those occur

GG1986 · 25/09/2022 12:52

Apparently it's fake news. But who knows for certain!

They don't wash their linen in public. There's something to be said for that

littlefirecar · 25/09/2022 18:43

I have relatives in China, including some in government

None of them have heard anything

My relative working at C-trip did confirm a lot of flights have been cancelled into Beijing but he has been told this is a covid measure ahead of the Congress
