superficial thread warning, please no hate, I know there’s worst things happening in the world right now

I’ve naturally got fairly thin hair, I’m a month post partum and in the last couple of months of pregnancy and in the month since I’ve given birth, it’s thickened up so much and has gotten so long. For the first time in a long time I actually love my hair and have been getting so many compliments about it.

I know that in the next month or so it’s probably all going to fall out 😞I can almost deal with losing what I’ve gained during pregnancy but im really worried im
going to have big bald patches if I lose loads as my hair wasn’t thick to begin with 😞

Has anyone kept their lovely pregnancy hair after pregnancy or is it a given that it is just all going to fall out? Is there anything I can do (vitamins to take etc) to lessen the blow somewhat?

My first pregnancy I kept what I grew (I already had decently thick hair and it just got thicker and longer and stayed that way which is not ideal with a baby).

Second pregnancy not so much. Lost it at the front only, so the hair line receded a bit but no chunks missing throughout my hair. I think it’s more common to lose it at the hairline than from chunks all over your head.

My hair didn't change at all. Still the same 14 years later.

Not all women lose hair. I did, but I have friends who've had multiple children and not had any pp hair loss

NeverDropYourMooncup · 24/09/2022 17:43

Yes, it's absolutely normal - due to all the hair that would have fallen out normally over the last nine months reaching its maximum growth and coming out together.

However, my hair is much thicker these days (having always been on the thin side and then it wasn't helped by a medical condition and a particular medication for it for a few years), which I attribute to a combination of using Magic Water after washing & a cheap ass blob of Dove conditioner on the ends, a silk pillowcase, a tangle teezer brush rather than yanking a sharp set of bristles through it and taking a multivitamin, magnesium and choline supplements, along with a healthy diet.

It's possible that paying attention to these things could lead to you seeing lots of little baby hairs appearing after about three months.

It’s not that you grow more hair in pregnancy, it’s that you don’t lose hair you would have otherwise lost. I believe it’s something to do with when we needed the extra hair to ward off the cold from the ice age. It feels like you’re losing a lot but it’s the combination of getting used to not seeing any hair being lost and you’re tired and hormonal. I don’t know anyone who lost any of their normal hair or been left with patches. You can buy vitamins - I bought some pregnacare ones which were for hair and nails but I can’t say they helped.

I didn’t lose any more hair then usual after I had dd. My hair became thicker and stayed that way, which was a pleasant surprise.

I’m pregnant again now, so I’ll wait and see what happens this time around!

I do have a few more grey hairs popping up then before though!

mistermagpie · 24/09/2022 17:46

My hair stayed exactly the same throughout three pregnancies and after. I do think that if your hair changes then it will probably change back, so in your case you might lose what grew.

I've got really fine hair and it was looking great during pregnancy. Unfortunately I lost a lot of hair post partum 😪 had the bald patches and all the horrors you describe.
My son was a prolific breastfeeder, I lost a lot of weight and he had me up every hour or two during the night for months so I was seriously exhausted!
I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it too?
I'm pregnant with number two and during the pregnancy my hair is looking better. I'm hoping I don't get the same hair loss this time around 🥺

KeepYaHeadUp · 24/09/2022 18:13

OP, you've just reminded me of my first haircut post partum when I boasted to my hairdresser that none of my hair had fallen out and I was already 3 months out. Guess what started the happen the next day? 🙄

DinosaurDuvet · 24/09/2022 18:18

I didn’t loose any hair (never got thicker when pregnant either), I also have thin, fine hair

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 24/09/2022 18:19

I didn't notice any change in my hair in pregnancy or post natally

Feetupteashot · 24/09/2022 18:21
