To not tip the beauty salon?

I already pay enough and don't want to tip later on. I cannot afford it as it is really but feel bad for not doing so?

I didn’t either. I felt bad but there are lots of people on minimum wage that we don’t routinely tip - this is why I hate a tipping culture - it leads to uncertainty and inflated the price of services. I like straightforward British rules where the price quoted is the price you pay - no more, no less.

pickledeggnog · 24/09/2022 13:11

I've never tipped at a salon

So YANBU

MrsDThomas · 24/09/2022 13:18

Why do you feel you have to tip?

i never tip. They are paid to work. Same as the rest of us

Chloefairydust · 24/09/2022 16:16

I used to work in a beauty salon. I never expected my clients to tip, especially wouldn’t now knowing how we are all struggling with the costs of living rising. However unless it’s their own business beauty therapists are usually on minimum wage despite this actually being a skilled and physically demanding job. I was always really grateful when my clients would tip.

Badgirlriri · 24/09/2022 16:18

Physically demanding? Really?

Iamnewhere · 24/09/2022 16:31

I would never tip in a salon, it's already ridiculously over priced!
I tip my nail girl occasionally because she WFH, is self employed, and charges WAY below what you'd pay in a salon. She's also brilliant.
But she doesn't expect it.
With her it's a cade of rounding 17quid up to 20quid.

TwinkleChristmas · 24/09/2022 16:38

Seems a bit tight to not tip.

I always tip.

If people think it’s ridiculously overpriced then don’t go to them.

Stichintime · 24/09/2022 16:42

I always tip the person who washes hair, sweeps up etc. They are usually teenagers in my salon and at school or college, I like their work ethic!

Fairyliz · 24/09/2022 16:42

What are you having done op?
I always find it odd that people book treatments when they can’t afford say a £3 tip.
If I was that hard up I would be saving my money to build up a reserve for unexpected expenses.

Badgirlriri · 24/09/2022 16:18

Physically demanding? Really?

So much so I had to give it up after 2 years, with repetitive strain in my arms/ hands wrists. I no longer can put any weight on my wrists either. So yes it’s physically demanding, usually long hours with lots of massage, bad posture doing nails ect… It’s actually a lot harder than it looks, and I would always be in pain at the end of my shift.

properdoughnut · 24/09/2022 17:30

Up to you. I don't think people expect tips so much these days

SalesMum · 24/09/2022 17:36

I do tip my hairdresser
She charges me £95 for highlights cut and blow but I have so much hair takes around 4 hours and it must be an effort! I gave her £105 this week

Chloefairydust · 24/09/2022 17:41

Personally I would tip if I think the therapist/ hairdresser has done a good job if I could afford to. And would be more likely to tip if the therapist is working for a business ( so most likely on minimum wage) , rather than if it’s their own business that seems quite successful. But I don’t think it’s generally expected.

HonestButFair · 24/09/2022 17:45

I think that’s really sad. The person you’ve gone to has got up off their arse to create a business which costs time and money. They spend time making you feel good and you don’t tip? That’s awful. You should be tipping at least 20% for every hair cut / beauty appointment

ClocksGoingBackwards · 24/09/2022 17:46

Do you tip pizza delivery drivers?

I tip at a beauty salon, nail bar and hairdressers when I feel like they’ve done a good job. If they’ve been a bit shit then I won’t, but I’d be far more likely to tip one of them than I would delivery people.

I don't tip the owner or the stylist, both of whom are doing fine. I tip the person who washes my hair, makes coffee, sweeps up and does the other work as they aren't getting any significant part of the price I pay.

jelly79 · 24/09/2022 17:52

I agree.

I tip my hair dresser, she is a young girl starting out and her prices are really reasonable

In a salon for beauty treatments I don't usually but if I have a particular therapist a few times I will do

I just think you can go on forever and prices are increasing too

Physically demanding? Really?

It's very physically demanding. My experience with hairdressing is that you are on your feet for your whole shift except the half an hour (if you are lucky) for lunch. As a PP mentioned the repetitive strain from the hairdryer and the round brush motions, I still get a twinge when I do my own hair now.

I would personally tip the apprentice a couple of pound at least. It made my day when I got tips, especially when I was on £100 a week, travelling in and trying to learn to drive etc. My tips meant I could treat myself to lunch that week.

Do you tip plumbers? Electricians? Window cleaners? Gardeners? They've all set up their own businesses...

FinallyHere · 24/09/2022 18:34

I don't tip the owner because they get the profits but do tip if a more junior washes my hair especially when their head massage is spectacularly good.

Exactly this. I was paid no more than £40 pw as a trainee hairdresser in 1993/1994. On my feet for 37h plus per week. I so appreciated the tips I got from clients. They funded my lunches and very often my bus fare.

Bluey124 · 24/09/2022 22:30

@HonestButFair that's unfair. Where I go, it costs me £45 for just a basic cut and wash. I'm not paying £50 just for that. Other workers are on minimum wage and don't get tips such as carers etc. Most people are struggling right now. I don't tip my hairdresser. Those extra pounds add up.
