AIBU to think we should not need warm banks/spaces in 2022?

My local council are encouraging local organisations to take up grants to make their spaces into warm, comfortable places residents can use in order to keep warm this winter. This is to help residents because of their massive utility bills.

I've seen a few different places now encouraging the use of "warm banks". Something my local council is really proud to promote. It doesn't sit right with me that they are promoting this when they should be doing more to fight this insane situation to begin with.

AIBU to think residents shouldn't even need warm banks?

Also is there anything similar in your area?

All the liverpool museums are doing this. Your right it is shocking that it’s needed.

but don’t worry the richest are going to be able to afford to keep themselves even warmer which is all that matters it seems

The church by me is collecting for a hot meal and warm up fund so people can eat at least once a day in the warm.

Crazy but true.

As a card carrying poor person that parody is exactly how it feels to me. I think they're content knowing it will kill some of us off.

I actually had to stop and think if it was fake or not! She's good!😂

YANBU, it is depressing. And a political choice by the Tories.

Pixiedust1234 · 24/09/2022 10:42

I agree that it shouldn't be needed in 2022, but there again I didn't think a large European county would get invaded either.

Was this grant and support available before to help the thousands of homeless people who live on the streets and die every winter

Of course it wasn't.

They expect charities in our city centres to pick up that issue :(

Will they be heating buildings with huge open spaces and high roofs?

DeeCeeCherry · 24/09/2022 10:53

Nightmare for library, church etc staff. People will be hanging around in there all day. Loads of people. How exactly are staff going to deal with that? Our local libraries, in addition to above, have been asked to promote that people can charge their phones there.

Vote Tory and this is what you get so people will just suck it up.

HappyHamsters · 24/09/2022 10:54

Yep, over 1200 reported deaths of homeless people here last year but all of a sudden we have become a caring sharing society who looks after our residents.

Threadkillacilla · 24/09/2022 11:01

It reminds me of years ago, we lived in a pub and had five regulars who would come in at opening, have one drink and stay until closing. I didn't understand back then why people would buy them a drink for the next day because no one seemed to mix with them but they were coming in for a warm.

MargaretThursday · 24/09/2022 11:30

It's nothing new that warm spaces get people sitting in to save on their own heating in the winter. Where I work we've had it for years.
There's also people riding buses (with over 60s bus pass so free) for similar reasons.

Issue comes when you need to close the building and people refuse to leave. It can get nasty pretty quickly. The other issue is that this year we may have to switch our own heating off/low as we don't have the money for it.

There were grants/funding out there to help the people on the streets before. Just I think this is more aimed at the people who can't afford to heat their homes than the homeless.

One of the issues is though that it's a bit of a postcode lottery. So one council starts working hard to help, gets the people off the streets and hot food etc... and the word gets around and more people come in to access it and they can end up with a worse homeless problem than they started with.
There's needs to be a more coordinated approach where all areas have help available, and just giving warm spaces isn't the end of it. They need experienced people who can advise and help the people with their current situation. Warm spaces is a sticking plaster over a bigger issue not a long term solution.
