To expect shoes to be taken off in the house?

Is it just me who gets wound up about this, or does anyone else think that shoes should be taken off at the door? I get fed up of it. Not talking about visitors particularly, more the kids. Come straight in from school and either go straight up to their rooms and reappear 3 hours later with them still on, or slob in the living room with them still on! Drives me bloody mad

Do you have carpet upstairs? I would ban shoes upstairs. Maybe have some strategically placed storage baskets they can kick them off onto on the downstairs and upstairs landings

Yes; solid floors downstairs, carpet upstairs. That would involve effort, they're v. lazy as soon as they get in from school 🙄

Nope , always shoes.

I've never wanted to be a slave to floors.

Growing up I was in and out of all sorts of houses and never took shoes off?>

The only person my mum remembers doing it for was because she was "Austrian".

Rich poor and all in between.... never shoes off.
With the usual common sense caveats...rain etc..

I absolutely hate being impeded by where shoes can or cannot go. It's odd the charts maddness.

lemonyanus · 23/09/2022 23:08

I really couldn't care less either way.

ilovepixie · 23/09/2022 23:08

Shoes off is disgusting. Bare smelly feet with flaky skin and toenails floating everywhere! No thank you.

PaperTyger · 23/09/2022 23:12

As an aside all the most stringent shoes off people know are also people very happy to share saliva with grandparents/ sibling so I've never understood why they are taking shoes off whilst mainlining actual germs into each other mourn?

My DC have never as far as I'm aware actually licked the carpet.

MajorCarolDanvers · 23/09/2022 23:13

Shoes off in our house for everyone.

No exceptions.

How do you get around the "my feet are cold in just tights" if they won't wear slippers though?

There's a pair of slippers, wear them or shut up?

PaperTyger · 23/09/2022 23:14

Major, not even the infirm?

Hallowbat · 23/09/2022 23:15

Shoes off at the door in my house, kids always do as have been brought up to and visitors are kept in the kitchen if they don’t

In laws did it for a couple of years, tried hinting etc and eventually one day when they showed up I said can you take your shoes off please. Such bad manners not removing shoes or least asking homeowners if they'd prefer you to.

Haha I've did this recently.. for years I've taken my shoes off at theirs so recently I got fed up and asked them to take their shoes off. I think it's rude not to take your shoes off in anyones house and minimum is to ask if you should take your shoes off!

But OP.. I don't get why the kids weren't doing this all along growing up, so should be the norm. My kids take theirs off as soon as they get to the door always have done and now they are teens with no issues

FrecklesMalone · 23/09/2022 23:17

Our house is not the cleanest in the world but I don't understand why anyone would want dirty shoes to be worn inside. So gross

PaperTyger · 23/09/2022 23:19

I actually think it's far ruder to expect people to take their shoes off.
And if you are one of these cheeky beggars at the very least please....

Make sure your floors are actually really spotless. .
Honestly!

They grumble that they're cold in just tights. I've suggested slippers but there's no way they'd wear them!

Just buy them something they will wear then. Slipper socks, ballet shoes, jazz shoes, Ugg boots, canvas trainers, plimsoles... plenty of things to avoid 'slippers'

I did suggest slipper socks too; I got told they look 'stupid' with tights. As if, it's only me that will see them anyway!

I don't know anyone infirm do it's never come up as an issue.

Luredbyapomegranate · 23/09/2022 23:27

I have wood floors so I don’t mind, if I had carpet I would. (I hate carpet.)

deflatedbirthday · 23/09/2022 23:33

We are a shoes off house. I can't fathom wearing shoes in the house. It's how both I and DH were brought up

onlythreenow · 24/09/2022 00:01

I don't wear shoes in my house, mostly, but that's for comfort's sake. I don't expect anyone else to take their shoes off - I have a hoover!! I'm not in the UK, but I've rarely been to a house here where I've been asked to take my shoes off.

Murdoch1949 · 24/09/2022 00:19

If the Queen (rip) visited, would you have expected her to remove her shoes? Same rule for everyone eh? If you invite people to your home, don't be a rude twat and ask them to remove their shoes. So declasse. If they offer, fine, but don't ask.

BadLad · 24/09/2022 07:18

Shoes off here. No exceptions at all. My wife is Japanese, and in her culture wearing shoes in the house is unthinkable.

In other people's houses, I follow their lead. Happy to take them off or keep on as they prefer

KangarooKenny · 24/09/2022 07:20

My family take shoes off, but I don’t ask guests to.

mondaytosunday · 23/09/2022 22:52

This seems a particularly English thing, I certainly didn't do it growing up in the US. But have to say about 95% of kids that came over took their shoes off automatically, snd my kids tended to do it too, even though I never asked them to.

I think removing shoes inside, and asking guests to do so, is very UN-English

Redebs · 26/12/2022 11:05

Would never have shoes on carpet. Disgusting.
Bare floors can be wiped with disinfectant, but not carpets.

Workpeople can't take shoes off for safety, but I expect overshoes to be used.
