Income tax - top 45% rate scrapped! Bonkers!

1000 replies

HoppingKangaroo · 23/09/2022 12:29

The 45% top rate of tax (which currently applies on earnings above £150,000) will be scrapped entirely. How will this help the economy? It will just add to the government debt and it just helps out the very weathly.
Why not have more help for the poorest in the country and not have tax cuts for the very wealthy.

The spongers want the rich to be taxed at 75% to fund their purposeless and unrewarding lives living off the state. That path would just lead this country to ruin.

I think you missed the part where the spongers announced in parliament today that they were giving themselves and their mates a significant increase in their incomes in a bid to ensure that this country is ruined as quickly as possible.

Hyperion100 · 23/09/2022 19:21

At what point do we flip the table over, say fuck this shit and start rioting?

I pity you. Imagine having such a narrow world view that you believe everyone MUST be as selfish as you are.

You can speak for yourself, but you certainly cannot speak for everyone. Off you go to Paris if you like... you might be disappointed to find that their top rate of tax is 45% though.

I pity you for your utter naivety.

Do you truly think people enjoy paying huge eyewatering taxes for so much waste? For a faceless bunch of people that spend all day on the sofa? That clog up the A&E with perfectly routine illnesses as they have nothing better to do, who lack such ambition or even basic responsibility of self ? Er, it is not about being selfish it is a fucking bottomless pit of grasping and the sheer inability to take ownership for your life, home and health.

We no longer have the luxury of the letting the wealth creators disappear, we can not afford to see them go. They will only stay if it is in their interests, they are not a charity ffs. Jesus.

I have a ,ich better idea, let us make 47% a tax for EVERYONE and then we can have well funded, perfect public services at long last, and plenty of cash left over to spend on civil service 'training' for all on how to be a good public citizen when the riots kick off.

People forget that though.

Imagine if all those who used private schools, hospitals, care settings etc decide to rightfully use the state run services they are paying for?

Some people are really too blinded and quite frankly bitter and jealous of other people’s money.

And I don’t agree with today’s cuts btw and we are a wealthy household who has paid hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of tax in the last decade alone.

It isn't about bitterness or jealousy in the slightest. It's about perceptions of right and wrong.

We are also a wealthy household that has paid a shitload of tax into the system. I work bloody hard, but I have more than enough for my needs. I am happy to pay taxes to support those who are much less fortunate than me.

Nobody is forgetting anything. It isn't that we don't know what the rich contribute, or that they take out so little. It's simply the case that some people believe in the collective endeavour. In the strongest in society supporting the weakest. In sharing what they have so that others have more.

You don't have to agree with that stance. You don't have to like it. You are free to feel that you don't want to share and that you'd rather keep your earnings to yourself. But don't try to pretend that those of us with a different value system are jealous or simply don't know what the rich contribute. We do see it, and we think it's just and fair.

You just sound clueless now tbh.

I get it. You don't want to share. That's OK, you are free to feel whatever you feel. But you are absolutely wrong to believe that everyone else is like you.

Are you eight years old?

'I get it you don't want to share?!' We get up at 4.30am every day and work easily 80 hours a week each, so funnily enough I am most definitely invested in how MY money is spent. Yes. As are most people.

Let us all agree to a 47% tax - perfect idea. I notice you said precisely nothing about that. If you are so kind and generous surely you would be up for that no? Why not suggest to Sir Keir introduces that policy at the next election?

You seem quite angry to at anyone who thinks the new tax rates are fairer.

I thought perhaps @Kissingfrogs25 was writing some kind of work of fiction and trying it out on us, but I think I have worked out who they are describing.

"For a faceless bunch of people that spend all day on the sofa?"

Normally we refer to the green benches in the House of commons, but one I suppose could call them sofas. Faceless is a good description of my Tory MP, given they are so rarely in the constituency and if they are actively avoid interacting with constituents.

"who lack such ambition or even basic responsibility"

Well that is clearly a description of Tory MPs. lacking basic responsibility is what they specialise in.

"it is not about being selfish it is a fucking bottomless pit of grasping and the sheer inability to take ownership for your life, home and health."

Yup, Tory MPs are nothing if not grasping, see for instance my beloved MP who has claimed 10,000s of pounds for Polish lesson, despite his mum being Polish and already speaking the language. Yup, they don't think they should have to pay for their own homes either.

Luckydip1 · 23/09/2022 19:33

@Hyperion100 instead of rioting why don't you channel that energy into getting a job and working hard then you might find one day that you think it's unfair to pay away half your earnings in tax.

You have made interesting assumptions about my overall view on this, which I can assure you are wrong.

You simply can’t keep taxing the wealthy, insult for being wealthy (many in here are) and then insult them further for not wanting to not more and more.

Again, what do you think is fair in this instance?

We absolutely have to support the less fortunate in society…to a point!

So when do you say enough is enough (there are currently plenty of jobs, retail and hospitality are crying out for staff) and yet so many healthy, able people out of work.

You can’t redistribute everything or suggest it should be (because whilst you don’t say that explicitly, your posts strongly intimate it) and expect higher earners to just be ok with it.

And you might not be bitter or jealous, but plenty on here are. It’s the Same way some wealthier people think that poorer people are lazy scrounges, but by no means all do.

And We have collective endeavour here already I think you’ll find. Many many people will never, ever pay a penny tax and will still be educated, fed, treated medically, housed and clothed etc. And so they should - absolutely.

Will these same people have as much or as fanciful as those who earn and pay more - not they won’t and neither should they.

Am I?

I guess it's all a matter of perception. I think a lot of people are coming across as incredibly unpleasant on this thread, particularly those who are so eager to defend their wealth while others are struggling to feed their families or heat their homes.

It all boils down to values at the end of the day. If people think I'm unpleasant for questioning their sense of entitlement, then so be it. They are not really people whose opinions particularly matter to me.

I entirely agree. We set up a local foodbank and a clothing bank - very happy to be huge supporters of charity, but we have a MILLION job vacancies - any one able bodied should bloody be working!!!!! I am sick of the excuses - we need to get tough.

Kissingfrogs25 · 23/09/2022 19:15

At least you get a policy you can understand from the conservatives. Labour appear to not have any at all, and are similarly fracturing.

It is fair to say we are, as a country, certainly in transition.

In transition? That's an interesting way to say "going off a cliff".😆

Our economy is fucked and its going to get worse. We have become quite isolationist and lack foreign trade deals. We are a small country and don't have a lot of natural resources. Brexit continues its toxicity impacting our ability to do business abroad and is nowhere near done. Workers in multiple sectors are balloting Strike action. Inflation is high and rising. Social care is fucked. The NHS is fucked. And winter is coming

@Kissingfrogs25 Can you explain to me, why so many people in work also need to be on benefits to barely scrap together enough to feed themselves?
