Just after a bit of advice
My mum has had persistent cough for years now. Its actually now getting worse and I am started to get really concerned.

She has all tests done and they have only ever given her an inhaler. Theres basically times when it goes away and then it comes back? its really odd as her cough has gone worse.

The cough is dry and persistent, all day every day! I really want to now go private but thought I would ask here.

She is foreign and has lived in her native country till she was 20. I do wonder if its just because of a different climate but that doesnt add up as she has been here for years.

If anyone can give advice Would be greatly appreciated

Did she take the recommended doses of inhaler and is still on it? When you say 'foreign' did she have TB etc as a child? I take it that she had different scans, not just X-rays?

Have they checked for reflux? Can cause a dry cough!

Does she also have gastrointestinal issues? Mine also went on for years, chest scans came back clear, inhaler also provided.
Only thing that worked for me is dietary changes (notably dairy which is mucus forming) and other other irritants which may cause reflux or nasal drip...

Is she on blood pressure tablets.?

I had a chest x-ray for my persistent cough, as PP said it turned out to be acid reflux (plus nasal drip in my case). Basically some of the acid gets breathed into the lungs especially at night and causes irritation. Can she get something like omeprazole where she is?

Snowisfallinghere · 22/09/2022 10:59

Reflux or allergies probably. A steroid inhaler would be more effective.

It could be silent reflux of which coughing is often the only symptom a patient can feel. The lining of the throat burns yet the surrounding tissue is numbed.

Ask a GP to investigate this. Omeprazole is usually prescribed, but long term changes in diet will help a lot. The Acid Watcher Diet book was of huge help to me for this.

I had a daily cough for most of my teens & adult life. I've had tons of inhalers, antibiotics, chest x rays but nothing would cure it. Only found out recently, at 50 years old, that it was silent reflux mostly brought on by drinking tea! After trying various PPI meds I found that Esomeprazole suits me best and I really only have to take it for a few days now to stop a flare up, usually after drinking tea, however black pepper and mint do it too. I'm now an espresso drinking instead and it doesn't cause any reflux.

My MIL had this, had every test going, and it turned out to be allergies. Anti-histamines sorted her out.
