AIBU?
To buy a Hottub

Can anyone tell me how much it costs to run a 6 seater hottub during the energy crisis? Am I crazy to even think about it? I know the chemicals can add up but it's the electricity bill I am concerned with.

Proper hard shell hot tub? Or inflatable lazy spa type thing?
Treacletoots · 21/09/2022 20:51
Before the prices went up our friend paid about £100 a month for theirs.
To be honest though we've found it actually cheaper to.join a local spa health club type place as a family than running a hot tub, and we get loads more for our money.

With a hosepipe ban? Not sure this is a good idea.
Not everyone’s on a hose pipe ban… we’ve plenty of water in the north west!

We only use ours in the summer as it would cost too much to heat up in the winter (and loads more water). I figure if you have it on all day then £8 a day is probably about right.
Some things we have found to reduce energy consumption- fill with warm water (cheaper for boiler to hear water than hot tub heater), bought additional lid to insulate, got a semi solid tub made from foam rather than inflatable (also found it sturdier).

You can get those wooden hot tubs that have a stove to heat the water. They look quite pretty too.

We only have ours on in the warmer weather, it's too expensive otherwise. It's 8 seater and costs about £6 a day when we do have it on.

I really want a hot tub too! This thread really made me smile haha

We bought a relatively cheap inflatable one. We don't run it at temp continuously, i run the filter to keep it clean, then turn it up in the morning when we want to use it. We put it away from late sept to mid december, then again from mid jan to late march.
It does cost but we love it and can easily afford it.

I bought an inflatable lockdown crisis one! It was much more expensive to use than I thought, my bills doubled. No way I’m switching it on at the moment. I seriously wouldn’t buy one right now, even the proper hot tubs which are more energy efficient use a lot. Chemicals do add up but it’s the electricity which is your biggest cost

Our 6-seater has been an average of 7kwh per day across the year and we use it 3-4 times per week for around an hour each time with temp set at 37C (a bit higher in the winter, a bit lower in the summer). At 34p per unit (price from 1 Oct), that's an average of £2.40 per day. The big hit is heating up the water the first time - takes c24hours continuous heating at 2.7kw so approx 65kwh which is £22. We change the water every 3 months. We've chosen not to run ours for the time being.
