Best apparatus for clothes to get darked on

Tumble drier has lost its charm following an email from energy supplier, so looking at alternative ways to dry clothes.

What are your best recommendations for clothes to get darked on?

I know they will get darked on, because by the time I've remembered they're outside drying on the airer, there are too many monsters around to go outside and collect them.

You can use an indoor airer? No dark inside

Jux · 20/09/2022 22:52

Washing line stretched from one side to the other of whatever space you have. Look at the sun't movement to maximise the amount of time your stuff has to be darked on.

Don't forget to factor in those spider willies, whether it be to maximise their incursion or minimise it.

NO HALF MEASURES! 😂

But where's the fun not to mention the space in that?!!

Personally I've always favoured a nice rotary line. The freestanding ones seem really shite though, they had them at one of DC's nursery and I only ever saw them on their sides dumping laundry in the mud.

Blister · 20/09/2022 23:03

Washing line under a porch roof.
Might get squirrels doing a midnight jig too.

Q2C4 · 20/09/2022 23:06

I use a rotary dryer but I've had to redo 3 loads this week already as my (hugely inconsiderate) neighbors keep having bonfires.

Not joking - I think there's granite, palladium, or even diamond slabs under the lawn. Can't seem to wallop a stake in for love nor money, hence the freestanding recommendation requirement. I have a posh Brabantia whirligig but I can't use the damn thing 😭

I use a parasol base for my rotary washing line. You just need to check the diameter of the base and the line to make sure it will fit.

Could you explain what 'recommendations for clothes to get darked on'??? I have never heard this phrase in 40+ years. What does getting darked on mean?

It’s a phrase from a ‘classic’ Mumsnet thread.

Etive · 20/09/2022 23:14

You also get owl drool according to MN many years ago. Clothes don’t dry outside in winter where I am anyway, therefore there’s no darked on concerns here. If I hang anything out in winter it either comes in as wet as it went out or as stiff as a board with ice.

You could be like my gran though who dried clothes on a ‘pulley’ that hung on the ceiling in her kitchen, the only draw back was the clothes had a distinct odour of cooking and chip fat…

A very ‘wearing’ MN thread where it was repeated time and time again.

Heated airer. Complete game changer!

I'm guessing a heated airer uses far les leccy than a tumble drier?

Owl drool makes me feel queasy.

I like the sound of the pulley system, although not the cooking smells. I shall investigate. Thank you.

Frustratingly the wind which whistles down
my back passage prevents this wondrous idea of yours from working. 😭

Yep - that saying was/is incredibly tedious and boring......... 🙄 Washing being 'darked on' was never funny. Worried about spider willies are you @MahMahMahMahCorona

Oh wind whistling down your back passage............. I am crying with laughter here. Think I just broke a rib. 🙄

MyDogAteMyHousework · 20/09/2022 23:37

The people a few doors down from me have a Brabantia thing that attaches to the wall and they pull it out. Looks quite good but my other neighbours (a few doors the other way) have some doves that like to sit on my garage roof and shit off the end of it, so I don't think it would be great for me.

I have a heated airer for winter/rainy days. Think it claimed to be 6p per hour to run, but that must have gone up. Not too bad and pretty effective.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 20/09/2022 23:40

Heated airer in the bathroom. Cheap to run and dries stuff nice and quickly. Also have a rotary thing but the base has been concreted into the patio so on dry days it should be usable!

But the wind down your back passage (😆) would be a fantastic aid to the drying process.
If you're worried about the stability of it due to the wind, would concreting your rotary line into a large bucket with a wide base be a better idea?

It's from one of those 'hilarious' mumsnet threads that get dragged back up every now and again.

Ponoka7 · 21/09/2022 00:08

I use a JML Dri Buddi. They are cheap to run.
