Saw someone stealing from a Foodbank point in Tesco

Rant
I couldn't believe my eyes I seriously couldn't. His appearance looked clean and smart I just saw him from behind and I thought he was putting in a donation and if my eyes didn't deceive me he actually walked off with an item and put it in his shopping bag. I didn't report or challenge him it was so shocking.
Ill email Tesco and the Foodbank about it.
But just how low can society get?

Saw someone stealing from a Foodbank point in Tesco

nope. No you didn’t. You saw nothing.

Ohtsd · 21/09/2022 09:57

When there are threads about someone picking up a fiver in the street all hell breaks loose on here but it seems it is OK to steal from charity food bins as you may be desperate.

CallMeLinda · 21/09/2022 10:11

I would pretend I hadn't seen it.

IhateHermioneGranger · 21/09/2022 10:37

One item I might have a quick look towards them but move on. Stuffing a bag full from it I would tell the staff but not confront the person.

I also don't believe he wouldn't be aware what a food bank is. Highly unlikely.

I like the phrase, "if you see someone shoplifting, no you didn't".

Oh, that is very good. Agree.

ifonly4 · 21/09/2022 10:48

It doesn't surprise me if he was stealing. Each collection point is different, but our local food bank has 3-4 people who come at once - a couple take the food collection and the others have funds to buy goods so do the purchasing.

I work for a well known shop, we loose 20% of our stock to theft, which has a knock on effect for all of us - that money could be used for a combination of staff, extra staff training and keeping prices down for everyone. If we suspect a shoplifter we have various interventions we advised to do, but not to confront them over it as they don't want staff to feel threatened. Very sad.

latetothefisting · 21/09/2022 11:59

To those saying what the point would be in emailing tesco, well a fairly easy step would be to move the foodbank collection point right next to the security guard stand, to deter people.

Everyone falling over themselves to virtue signal that we should just ignore shoplifting in all forms - not everyone who shoplifts is a virtuous poor angel fallen on hard times through no fault of their own. Lots are perfectly comfortable/well off and do it for a myriad of reasons - to make a profit by selling on (which is why one of the most stolen things is baby formula), out of compulsion, because they get a rush out of it, because they just don't like paying for stuff....

The more stuff is stolen, the more shops put up prices to compensate, which then means poor people who wouldn't dream of stealing can't afford to buy stuff...

It's not hard to believe that people are starving.

LondonQueen · 21/09/2022 17:05

I'd assume he must really need it if he is stealing from a food bank.

I'm with you.

Most people steal to feed a habit ,not themselves.

Obviously some are. But not when its bags full of detergent, air fresher things, candles, razors

@wonderlizard rtht I can't unsee it and I was concerned for the Foodbank and the thief and society issues in the current economic climate . Is there anything else about my post you don't understand?

So the shoplifters I've dealt with have been varied from a woman whose husband had dementia and was using it as a cry for help to the organised gangs .

The last one I dealt with had 6 bottles of bicardi in his coat . He wasn't starving. He was part of a Lithuanian gang who went out of town to nick stuff to sell . He suddenly didn't speak English on arrest.

I have every sympathy for people who are addicts actually stealing the razors washing powder and coffee to few a habit . They're usually lovely , compliant, no bother on arrest , admit everything without hassle .

If also have sympathy for people who are starving- but that's why food banks exist . Most decent people follow the rules on these things and go to the food bank .

stillvicarinatutu · 22/09/2022 01:32

The posts of he was probably starving make me laugh .

No .
He probably wasn't .

The majority of posters here have no experience of dealing with shoplifters. The benefit of a doubt is heartwarming.

Agree. You can tell I think who has worked in retail.

It is pretty laughable to see how naïve posters are. I've seen how dishonest people can be, whether they are genuinely desperate or just getting a thrill.

stillvicarinatutu · 22/09/2022 03:07

Yeah but I Dd
It must be such a warm fuzzy feeling to not think people are generally arseholes . I miss being like that .

@Monty27

Are you still upset about this? I'm genuinely a bit concerned for you now.
Have you reported the incident and what did they say?
I think if you've done everything you can, it's time to let it go.

can't say agree with this . The smack rats I've delt with are scum

LetMeSpeak · 22/09/2022 12:36

and…. There are people who I see leaving foodbanks and enter into luxury 4x4. I’m sure many people in foodbank have all sorts of luxury items at home. Does it matter? Absolutely not! I don’t know how much they are struggling. What’s important is them and their families are getting fed.

do you know how degrading it must be to collect food from an foodbank and have people like you looking and judging them?

Do you honestly believe that?

Sidking · 22/09/2022 21:54

He went and put it in his basket? Then walked out or carried on shopping?

I've rifled through a donation bin once thinking it was a discount one 🙈 I put it back once I realised obviously but that was a bit embarrassing 😳
