Senior leader at work wants a 1:1 meeting with me, AIBU to be nervous?

I had a completely out-of-the-blue email from a senior leader at work (my manager's, manager's manager) asking for a 1:1 catch-up meeting. It sounds like it's just an informal catch-up but I'm kind of anxious about it and knowing what to say.

I did have some extended sick leave recently due to my mental health and I'm worrying it could be related to that?

Fairly common in my industry for senior leaders to have “skip levels”.

I was thinking the same. Don't know where you work OP but skip levels are common in big multinational companies.

I highly doubt your x3 Manager would be getting their hands dirty with anything nasty. That would be a straight HR meeting.

I'd expect it's either a random chat catch-up 'meet the team' type meeting or they're investigating your manager for something.

This. I really don't think you have anything to worry about OP

I had this today, feared the worst, was offered a promotion
Still getting my head around it! (For context, I have taken leave for MH/bereavement issues this year, hence why I was focussed on the less positive stuff)
good luck 🌺

I think if it was something to worry about you would have been given the option of contacting your union or 'taking someone'. Bad form not say what it is though, and a needless cause of anxiety.

Not necessarily. If it's an informal chat or first warning unions might not be called upon.

OP, if you can't think of anything you've done then I think it might just be a return to work meeting. I know I've been there before when I've thought a meeting was going to be negative but it's been okay.

I've already been back at work for 6+ weeks so I've had my return to work meeting already (with my line manager).

I doubt it's a promotion given the circumstances.

Maybe it's just a casual catch up meeting, it does seem really out of the blue though. I've not had a meeting with this person since my job interview lol

Did you ask for any support/adjustments as part of the return to work meeting?

OneFrenchEgg · 21/09/2022 18:33

I agree with the pp suggestion something is afoot higher up the chain and they are doing a little digging.

Zezet · 21/09/2022 18:58

I also spontaneously thought they are digging for something that's happening higher up.

girlmom21 · 21/09/2022 19:04

I think it'll be some kind of opportunity.

76543br · 26/09/2022 12:39

I brought up this meeting with my manager and they seemed to not know what it was for/about, so I'm sure it's just a random check in kind of meeting rather than anything serious?

How on earth could we know?

I had those kinds of meetings in a previous job. Usually it’s more about senior people trying to build relationships with people on a lower level/ hear what people have to say who may be closer to clients etc. might be worthwhile finding out if any of your peers had a similar kind of meeting put into their calendars.
i doubt it’s related to your absence, but I guess we don’t really know.
