As far as I can tell from looking at news commentary etc there has been no talk at all about the Queens death having an impact on the markets etc has there? (Or apart from short term implications of bank holiday etc)

It just occurred to me and I find that a really interesting testimony to the separation of the monarchy from political power.

I know there are some concerns about Charles being more political - but this also doesn’t seem to have translated into any concerns more generally about uks economic outlook.

really just interested to see if I have missed anything and if anyone has a different insight.

(and no I can’t sleep….)

I disagree. I work with many small to medium companies and they all say it's been dead as a dodo, really had a Dramatic affect the last 10 days, and been generally somber feeling, and quiet.

i may not have been clear - I mean at a macro level - of course there has nbeen a short term impact in terms of footfall etc

i mean that there have been no headlines along the lines of uk shares tumble, property prices rise or uk foreign policy shifts etc. even in niche areas such as say horse racing where she may have had a specific interest in regulation I haven’t heard anything mentioned.

which is quite a remarkable twist given the longer term history of the monarchy and political power in the uk.

SMEs don’t feature on the stock market so their experience isn’t really relevant.

I'm not sure why it would. It seems to me the Royals have mostly a ceremonial role, with some charitable work. I can't see how that impacts the markets. They are not meant to share their opinion on anything major and Charles is not much different to his mother. It's not like a change of Prime Minister which can change the outlook of the country.

Teenyliving · 20/09/2022 06:27

@Autumnisclose thsts my point - it’s an extraordinary thing to have removed all political influence and power but still retain this extraordinary cultural power.

the psychology of it is very interesting

I disagree @OperaStation. Not directly, but indirectly, such huge events have an effect on everything. On how people behave, on ordering or not ordering things, buying and selling. And ultimately the stock market too.

No, it hasn't, because Charles said he wasn't going to continue to push his policy preferences, so the neutrality (theoretical) of the monarchy has been reaffirmed.

Truss is doing quite a good job of making the pound drop in value all by herself anyway, with her mad economic proposals. The fact that the poorest are going to get 63p per month benefit from her ridiculous tax cut aimed at the richest for example!
