To say that this film is the most real film that I've watched in a long time?

I don't know what gets films nominated for Oscars or Emmys (or is that for music?) but this film, the direction? The actors are fucking unbelievably talented (young). It was like watching real life. It feels like you're watching a documentary rather than a film as their acting is so unbelievably good.

It's this one. Rocks

The story is moving. It's a film I personally needed to watch because I can be a little bit of an arsehole and I tend to only consider my own pain and not consider what other people might be going through.

It's set in London. I've never seen anything as good in my life. Honestly. If you watch nothing else this week, watch this.

Watch it. Cannes film festival? Somebody has to pick this up. It's OUTSTANDING.

If anyone has watched it, I'd love to see whether you felt the same as me? It's a life I'm surrounded by but never really get to see inside.

If this film doesn't win at least one award, then there's a lot wrong with the film festival award things.

It is a very good film.

Made with non-professional, or first-job young actors, I think.

I saw it when it was first released, in lockdown.

Sarah Gavron is an excellent director, IMO.

I didn't notice the credits as I'm terrible with names.

Why has this film not already won an award??

Have you seen children that young, able to act that well? Jeepers. They were so real.

I watched this during Lent as part of our Church "Lent film" series. It was incredible. I was blown away by the acting, the realism. Just the whole thing.

BeyondApproach · 20/09/2022 00:28

The main character and her little brother and the Somalian girl were out of this world. How in the hell's blazes do you manage to get kids that young to be so 'in character'?

I know! I live in an area of London where 'fam' and 'innit' are used by the young ones. This just seems so unbelievably heartbreakingly real. I was crying for the entire second part of the film!

I now also want to foster some teenage children. 😢

What's the film?

OP posts:
BeyondApproach · 20/09/2022 00:47

I'm not sure that link worked. It's called 'Rocks' and it's on Netflix.

BeyondApproach · 20/09/2022 00:53

I've just looked again and it was released in 2019 and the last day to watch it on Netflix is 30th of September.

I think anyone who lives in London will identify with the characters portrayed.

I can't believe that nobody has picked up on this film? The acting is extraordinary! I've rarely seen people acting where you actually think that it's real and they're not acting?

I'm a Hollywood happy movie fan. This isn't my usual sort of film to watch at all.

It's heart-breaking because of the maturity they have to have and yet the pure innocence of them.

Just searched and I remember this being nominated for a few BAFTA's although I never got around to watching it. Will try to see it on Netflix. Wiki says it won a British Independent Film Award.

shipwreckedonhighseas · 20/09/2022 01:11

I'll watch it.

Well at least it won something. That's good to hear. I actually feel like those kids are real and I'm wondering how they're doing! 😁
How the hell do some ridiculous films win Oscars and this one didn't? The direction? The acting? Best film? Best lead? Whatever the hell else they give awards for.

I'd say it's more Cannes than Oscars though maybe.
Honestly. It's BRILLIANT and moving. But most of all, it is real.

We moved out of that part of London to get away from families like this.

While it might make for a “gritty” film to be enjoyed from the comfort of your home it’s most definitely not the sort of community that you want to bring your children up in.

WTF? Families like 'this'?

If you lived in that area you are one of 'those' families. Sorry to break it to you.

Did you actually watch the film?

Based on the film, you cannot trust anyone these days

No, I really am not, but we did have to put up with the utter detritus crossing from the worst ‘holes in Tower Hamlets to steal from us, have their running battles and try to recruit children for their county lines gangs.

Anyone decent who’s able to moves out.

Amazing film OP. All so talented. Equally has me considering adoption. Or at least thinking that I should 'maybe' consider it...

How fucking dare you refer to people as detritus.

You are detritus to those in Canary Wharf who pay 3/4 of a million for a one bed flat.

Yeah, I think I'm good with teens as I'm an arsehole myself lol so I can identify. I do tend to pick up waifs and strays. I'm currently on the waiting list to adopt a dog from Battersea. I doubt I'd pass the vetting process for fostering!
