To expect a GP/Nurse Practitioner appointment?

I am repeatedly hearing about people who can't get a response from their GP, never mind an appointment and it's for serious stuff, not coughs and colds.

Mine are amazing, I was seen with breathing difficulties 2 hours after I called them, this is not unusual. If I call before between 8.30 to 9 ish with more minor issues and can get a same day appointment with a nurse practitioner, who are brilliant.

I get antibiotics the same day for cystitis. AIBU that it just makes me mad everyone doesn't get the same service and it's a post code lottery?

Having said how brilliant my GP are an urgent referral from A&E to a loss of consciousness clinic which should have been in days came through for 6 months later! Very glad I have BUPA although morally not sure if it's fair.

Not sure what the point of your post is tbh. Of course it’s not unreasonable for everyone to expect a good service from their GP surgery.

Agreed and many millions are not. We are luck like the OP in recent months can get face to face or phone almost same day but we do not work so easier

A lot depends on funding, size of the practice, number of doctors / nurses, number of patients, season, area (eg economically poorer place which may have a higher prevalence of smoking, drinking, obesity, mental health issues).

MumCanIDoThat · 19/09/2022 12:23

I think it depends on area though. I recently moved to a very affluent area (because of schools) and things work much better here.

Where I live it seems to depend on the surgery. My surgery I can phone at 8am and get a same day appointment. My 91 year old granny can phone her surgery at 8am and be told that she can have a phone appointment in 3 weeks time.

My GP are the same. Did an e consult and had a doctor call me within an hour, wasn't even urgent. I live in a vilage.

YellowTreeHouse · 19/09/2022 12:51

YANBU. Mine are the same.

They have to see you with breathing difficulties. Any GP would.

I was answering a message from a lady on MN who found a lump on her breast but couldn't get an appointment - the sheer worry of that is enormous, but she can't even get to see a GP, never mind a referral for a mammogram. It struck me as a breast cancer survivor, (not saying this is cancer) but these lumps and bumps need to be checked out soonest.

It shouldn't be a postcode lottery IMO.

Although I got through the GP hurdle quickly the specialist referral was a whole new 6 month wait ball game despite it being serious.

I think more of us are going to have to get private cover to get what we have already paid for on the NHS. Doesn't seem right or fair that if you have the money, your life can be more savable.

As I said it is the same with less serious issues such as cystitis.
