Trying to make a bit of extra cash
I started looking on eBay at what's popular and noticed people were interested in Halloween items.
I bought some Halloween mugs from Poundland and listed them for £5 and all 4 sold.
I listed a candle from tk maxx for £10 and it sold and I only paid £4 for it.
I sold some boots I got last year in sale for £15 and I got them for £7
So far I've made £160
My friend thinks it's a bit cheeky
Is it?
Am I in the wrong?
Would you continue doing it ?
I state in the listing the brand etc so it's not like I'm not being upfront

@sallypallu but you didn't buy them for yourself. Your first post makes it clear you bought it to sell on. That means you are subject to certain rules around business registration and tax, even if you are currently operating under the thresholds.

DutchessOfMuck · 19/09/2022 00:30

I don't think you are doing anything wrong op and you obviously have a flare for it. However you could increase your profits by buying wholesale and not from poundland etc.

Good for you for being proactive and not just sitting on your arse moaning about things 😁

Wishing you lots of luck

Had2Be · 19/09/2022 00:52

@Pansypotter123 That made me laugh

MothsAndWaspsAreUsefulPollinators · 19/09/2022 01:21

Seems all right to me. You're not misdescribing goods or otherwise defrauding people.

Some people are mad on ebay, what they will buy and pay for it. Let them.

Fill yer boots!

(Yes you are a bit Del Boy but in a good way, enterprising. I may take your lead.)

MidnightMeltdown · 19/09/2022 01:26

Be aware that if you're buying things to re-sell then you should have an ebay business account and pay tax.

If it's just a couple of things here and there, then you'll probably get away with it, but if eBay cotton on then you might find yourself with a large tax bill.

Apparently you have to earn over a certain amount before you have to pay tax I believe.

Hawkins001 · 19/09/2022 02:40

"How much tax will I owe?
The tax that you owe on eBay profits depends on how much profit you make. If you make up to £1,000 a year from your eBay sales – assuming that they don’t account for your full-time income – this is completely tax-free with the Trading Allowance. The Trading Allowance enables you to earn self-employment profits tax-free, not to be confused with the Personal Allowance which is the tax-free portion of your full-time earnings. The Personal Allowance currently sits at £12,570 for the 2022/23 tax year."

You have an entrepreneurial spirit. Your friend is a plonker.

giveovernate · 19/09/2022 04:12

This time next year you'll be a millionaire! Keep going!

Marvellousmadness · 18/09/2022 22:58

If you feel good about it and still get a good night sleep ....

I couldn't. I wouldn't.

But it isn't like you're lying in your adds. You are just ripping people off. Not my style.

She's selling mugs not babies! 🙄

Woopzies · 19/09/2022 04:19

You can double your money on this! 😂

Cervinia · 19/09/2022 06:55

Alan Sugar started small selling stuff. When she calls you Dell Boy, remind her of that!

Ladybyrd · 19/09/2022 07:06

No, not cheeky at all.

Just be aware though that if you are buying things to sell that's a business and you're liable to pay income tax and file a tax return. People have been caught out on eBay and argued they weren't operating a business, but when you've got a feedback of 10,000, it's a bit obvious.

You're not liable to pay tax selling your own unwanted things though.

Nothing wrong with setting up your own business. You have to make a profit- nothing cheeky about that.

ClocksGoingBackwards · 19/09/2022 07:20

You’re doing nothing wrong.

DuchessofAnkh77 · 19/09/2022 07:32

sallypallu · 18/09/2022 23:13

If I buy with the intention of keeping them for myself then later decide to sell as I've changed my mind ...then I don't think I need to declare anything
Also from what I'm aware you can sell up to £1,000

I'd get on ali express and get some samples and see what you think will sell!

At this level there is no tax, but if you start selling hundreds of items you will (eventually) need to register as a business and pay some tax.

There are "nay-sayers" all through life who will try to stop you losing weight or making money or whatever... I just don't tell people what I'm doing now!

connie26 · 19/09/2022 07:37

He who dares wins. He who hesitates.... don't

BitOutOfPractice · 19/09/2022 07:41

I presume the people asking op how much tax she’s paying on her £160 have checked how much tax eBay and Amazon pay. Or rather don’t

EachandEveryone · 19/09/2022 07:52

Once youve paid the P&P you wont make much

IncompleteSenten · 19/09/2022 07:55

Don't tell your friend how Tesco works. The shock would kill her.

Pleasecouldihavesomeadvice · 19/09/2022 08:06

I’d be proud. You are effectively running a small business. This is what shops do. If people wanted a pound land mug, they should buy it from Poundland, not on eBay

Ladybyrd · 19/09/2022 08:13

Don't tell your friend how Tesco works. The shock would kill her.

😂

I don't mean to be unkind OP, but your friend does like she's a few bananas short of a bunch. People don't sell on eBay for the love of it, or the goodness of their hearts.

Yes, selling dodgy cars to OAPs is pretty dastardly behaviour. Selling for profit is the whole point of eBay though.
