One of us in the household thinks that crisps are savoury/snacks and the other thinks they are classed as sweets/confectionary
Thoughts?

Thank you everyone, your thoughts are much appreciated x

Ooh this makes me wonder if you are the one in the wrong!

Most people would be like 'Ha! Knew it. Can't wait to show them this'.

You need the German category of Genußmittel. Things that are fun to eat but not particularly nutritious.
Machines make strawberry flavour for the Japanese market though

Papirus · 20/09/2022 07:58

They're definitely savoury but they are a treat to be eaten in moderation, like sweets.

MintyGreenDreams · 20/09/2022 08:01

They need a covid test.Crisps are savoury.

luxxlisbon · 20/09/2022 08:02

They are obviously not confectionery.
That’s just a fact, it’s not something to have an opinion on.

You've given me stranger ick.

Of course crisps are savoury - hence the flavours. Maybe they think sweets because you can buy them in 'sweet shops'?

You can usually buy newspaper in sweet shops too though 😂

FlorettaB · 20/09/2022 08:06

The definition of the word savoury is something that’s salty not sweet. Crisps are as savoury as it gets.

KimberleyClark · 20/09/2022 08:08

What about salted peanuts? They are salty so must be savoury. But they also end up in confectionery.

Salted peanuts themselves are savoury.

If you make confectionery with them, the product is confectionary - eg Snickers or peanut brittle.

Just like chili con carne is still savoury even if you add some chocolate to it.

Never seen peanuts in the confectionery section. They are usually with crisps or in an actual nut section.

And what of the dilemma caused by sweet-savoury order of ingestion?

Crisps are savoury, obviously. I'm amazed anyone would class they as confectionery. Weird.

Nope, only ever seen them with the crisps. In small shops they might be near the sweets, but no one actually thinks they are confectionery.

So who is the fool in your family who thinks crisps are sweets? It's obviously not you.

SkankingWombat · 20/09/2022 09:42

They are savoury, but they can have a sweetness to them depending on the flavour. Also, if you suck on them for long enough they become much sweeter as the carbs break down into sugars. However, they would never ever be considered confectionary!

I was team Savoury! Husband team sweet!

Knew it!

Has he accepted defeat gracefully? Any explanation from your husband as to why he thought that?

Woodsparrow · 22/09/2022 07:21

Definitely savoury.

I will say though that I still consider them a treat to have at the end of other food like chocolate. So my dds on the weekend for lunches have sandwiches, fruit, yoghurt and then a choice of crisps or a biscuit

Prayitsok · 22/09/2022 07:27

Savoury definitely!
I've always had a sweet tooth and eat chocolate every day. That is until I got pregnant, went off everything sweet and could pretty much only eat salty crisps!!

In his head he is always right! Nice to use Mumsnet to prove he is wrong!
