I could become a granny and that seems all kinds of wrong! I’m YOUNG!! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

I was 22 when my eldest son was born and now HE is 22 (dear lord!) and I can’t imagine him being a parent!

is it inevitable that we see our own children as β€œkids”?

my youngest son is five, so I’ve been in the thick of parenting really all my adult life (I have other children between the eldest and littlest).

I just struggle with the idea I might be Granny soon and can hardly object!

I have a colleague who is the same age as my parents, he and his wife had their child later in life and he has just finished uni whereas my parents had me at 23. I, on the other hand have a 13 year old (had her at 23 too) and my colleague finds it bewildering that he is old enough to be a grand parent of a child that age when his child has just finished education.

My younger sister was less than 20 when she had her oldest daughter, who was also less than 20 when she had her first daughter, so my sister became a grandparent before she was 40.

By the time she retires, there is a very good chance she'll be a great grandmother
In theory, her 2 oldest teenaged granddaughters could have children now - one is nearly school leaving age already.
It is possible she could be a great great grandmother before she's 70.

Meanwhile, my son has years to go before he'll even take his GCSEs & is a bit younger than most of her grandchildren.

She hates being called anything to do with any sort of grandparent.

I'm not all that keen on being Great Auntie Broken either.

Mannymoomin · 18/09/2022 15:22

I had my eldest at 14, my mum had me at 18, her mum had her at 21, and her mum also at 19.

That to me is massive headfuck, so my children still have their great great grandmother, and she’s 80 something
My oldest is now 17, and there’s still scope for my great nan to become a 3x great grandmother.
I’m 31 and my mum was made a nan at the same age as I am now.
It still sounds like a massive headfuck πŸ˜‚
But 4 living generations is absolutely weird, I hope my children break the cycle

The voting (which I didn’t mean to enable, but still) is about half and half, so I feel like I can choose to be elderly or young really depending on my mood πŸ˜‚

My DF was 22, DM 23, me 22 so they were grandparents at 44 and 45. DSis was 11 at the time so not as young as your youngest. My parents were kind of over parenting by then though and I was effectively a third parent to DSis, I think they preferred the role of grandparents.

janj2301 · 18/09/2022 15:50

When I had my second at 32 I always used to joke she could have been my grandaughter, well we are from Essex

CathyTre · 18/09/2022 15:15

I think it’s that my own youngest is only five that makes it seem weird!

My eldest son and youngest brother are the same age!

BogStandard · 18/09/2022 16:19

A school friend of mine (same age) became a granny before I became a mum! I had my first at 35.

Abraxan · 18/09/2022 16:45

My cousin was a grandmother in her early 20s. Both she and her daughter had a baby aged 15/16y. There is a chance she could be a great grandparent soon and she is just turned 50!

Fifthtimelucky · 18/09/2022 17:19

I'm at the other end of the age range as I had my children at 36 and 38.

I'm now in my 60s and would like to be a grandmother while I'm still young and fit enough to do things with my grandchildren. I suspect it will be 5 -10 years before I am one though, as neither daughter looks likely to have one soon.

Neggymumum · 18/09/2022 19:52

Offs , have your kids when you have them, these days no one cares or noticesv

badbaduncle · 18/09/2022 19:54

My DGM was a Grandma at 35, and a very good one with it! She is now 98 and has........ 16 DGC, 22DGGC and 5GGGC!
I am 47 and quite irritated by a lack of grandma opps in my near future!

A580Hojas · 18/09/2022 19:56

I have a friend who became a great grandma at 61. She is jaded from being the default family emergency child carer. When her grand daughter had a child last year (age 20) she put her foot down about looking after this child to enable the mum to go back to work.

theDudesmummy · 18/09/2022 19:57

My granny became a granny at 41. I became a mother at 46.

Soubriquet · 18/09/2022 19:59

I was 23 when I had my eldest. She’s 9.

The other day, we was watching a funny childbirth video (nothing gory), and she said β€œoh I should watch this. I could have kids soon”

I spluttered a bit and said wait at least 15 years girl!

Neverendingmindfuck · 18/09/2022 20:08

My only child made me a grandma at 38. I was often mistaken for the wee ones mum, especially at the school.
Dgc put them right though!
I have two now, I have been very lucky to be at both births. They are amazing 😊

Babdoc · 18/09/2022 20:09

My grandfather died thirty years before I was born, and granny six years before. My mother was almost forty when she had me, and I was mid thirties when I had my DDs. They are now early thirties and neither wish to have babies anytime soon, so I might not survive to be a grandmother at all!
You might find it a shock to be a young granny, OP, but at least it means you actually meet your grandchildren while you still have the energy to enjoy them.

Creepymanonagoatfarm · 18/09/2022 20:15

I had a ds at 20. He had a ds at 25...
I had a dc 18 months old at the time!

TheBigFatMermaid · 18/09/2022 20:25

I was 27 when I had my first and 39 when I had my last. My eldest DD was adamant that I should not have more once she started having babies (young, at 19) .

I was done anyway, my cut off personally (you do you though) was 40.

It's funny sometimes with a now 17 Yr old Aunt and a 16 Yr old uncle to a 4 and 6 year old...

But, I will say ......you have to get over it if it happens and get on and enjoy it.

U2HasTheEdge · 18/09/2022 20:31

I become a granny at aged 40!

SardineStitches · 18/09/2022 23:12

I was 19 when I had my first and 21 for the second. My two eldest are now older than me when I had 2 kids!! My eldest is almost as old as I was when I had my 3rd and my 3rd child is the same age as when I had my first in 6 months.... Luckily none of them are anything like me and are all way more sensible than I was. None are interested in settling down yet!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 18/09/2022 23:16

My school friend became a grandmother at 36 as she was 18 when she had her daughter, who then had HER first child also at 18.

I am 48 and have a 21 and an 18yo. Both of them a) don't have or want a significant other yet and b) tell me they don't want kids.

I could have a long wait yet.

summergone · 18/09/2022 23:21

I became a gran at 39 , I was pregnant myself and my ds21 told me his gf was pregnant too! There is 5 months between my granddaughter and my son . They have another dd5 now , I love taking the 3 of them for days out .

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 18/09/2022 23:27

I had my first at 16 and became a grandmother at 39. My mum was 21 when I was born and my gps 17 when she was born. It was nice that we had so many generations of family around, we only lost my grandad this year.

Anon778833 · 18/09/2022 23:29

I was a very young mum too and I have a 2 year old now. Why is it such a stretch to imagine being a GP when you were a young parent?
