To ask how many calories you eat in a day to lose weight?

I was told by my PT to eat around 1000-1100 to lose weight. I find it almost impossible to function properly - I am losing weight very slowly, but always hungry and frankly quite miserable.

I am also told by a GP friend that this is ridiculously low.

But when I increase the calories to 1500 or so I gain weight.

I measure and weigh everything, eat healthy, lots of water and lean protein.

For reference I am 5 3' and 69kg.

1500 as recommended by Lose It app and losing 1lb a week.

Whitewolf2 · 18/09/2022 21:12

I can have 1270 calories according to my fitness pal to lose 1lb a week, which I’m attempting at the moment. I’m 5’6 so your figures sound about right, miserable though it is!

Over 1200 I put on weight, 800 I can lose weight but slowly. I have hashimoto.

lljkk · 18/09/2022 21:21

OP: how old are you?
I'm female, 61 kg, 55yo. I eat/burn/maintain on about 2400/day so I presume I'd lose 1 lb/week if I ate just 1900/day.

Twizbe · 18/09/2022 21:22

I eat around 1000 a day. I'm 6ft and 78kg. I'm still losing weight.

I focus on low calorie filling foods.

I eat wholewheat pasta, bread, noodles and rice. Lots of fruits and veggies, lean meat, fish etc. I'm dairy free due to family allergies. I avoid UPF and sugar.

I'm rarely hungry unless it's almost a meal time.

I read somewhere
3500 calories = one pound of fat.

So put yourself in that deficit a week.
You should only be aiming to lose 1-2 pounds a week anyway for it to be sustainable. You want a lifestyle not a quick fix.

Your PT is shit for suggesting 1100 calories and I would lose all faith in him.

Also what are your long term goals with a PT? Are you planning on getting stronger- do you weight lift or just cardio.
She/He shouldn't be telling you calories. They should be telling you protein. You cannot train and sustain on that low calories. You will feel horrendous and your body will hold on to every single bit of nutrition.
Start eating more- 1400-1500 and you will see a positive impact

You're contradicting yourself - if maintenance calories are 1,600 (not unreasonable for someone fairly short) then to lose 1 lb a week requires 1,100 calories a day.

I try and stick to 1200 to lose weight but I’m 58
when I was younger 1500 would give a slow but achievable weight loss

greenhousegal · 18/09/2022 21:34

I'm not sure, as I do the 16/8 intermittent fast whenever I feel my clothes getting a bit on the tight side. I never weigh myself either, I kind of just know when I need to do the 16/8. It works like a dream for me, but may not suit everyone. I only do it for a fortnight at a time with a day off each weekend. I am prediabetic so it is also a good way to keep diabetes away.

I am not young anymore, 5ft.5 and 63 kilos. I was weighed in hospital last week for a procedure so that's how I know!

Crazycrazylady · 18/09/2022 21:40

Now in my 40s and I maintain my weight my weight at 1500 calories , to loose at a semi decent rate I need to drop to 1200 calories .
I have a desk job though and am not half as active as I should Bens

FlutterbButterfly · 18/09/2022 21:41

Going to admit NRTFT, but for me I needed to consume 1200 or less to lose weight. Anything over and I was steady and overweight. Its very individual so comments if that's too much/little do not help.

ageingdisgracefully · 18/09/2022 21:43

1200 per day. 5'4" and 62. My tdee is 1450. It's not a diet though - it's all the time. I lose a bit slowly, then go off the rails for a couple of days, put weight on and lose it again. I can't get really thin now - used to be able to when younger.

35965a · 18/09/2022 21:45

Can’t lose weight on more than 1200 cals per day. I walk an hour a day and work out (weights and swim) 3-4 times per week.

WhereAreTheLostPens · 18/09/2022 21:47

I am 5ft6

I am on a diet where I have set my calorie limit at 1200 calories per day.

For the last month I've consumed an average of 800 calories a day and I've lost almost a stone. Weight loss will.slow a bit now as I'm getting lighter, but I still feel happy and not too hungry and am looking forward to continuing.

People will say it's a crash diet and not sensible, but it's working. I must have a slow metabolism or something because I can't seem to lose weight eating more than 1200 calories.

A great app is 'Lose It'. It helps you track calories. You really need to put every single calorie into the app to make sure you are not cheating, and stay well within your limit for the day, and you will see the weight come off.

Lougle · 18/09/2022 21:49

5'8" and I've been low carb since May. Lost 12.5 kg, no calorie counting. I eat my carbs from veg with less than 5% carbs. I keep fat high.

Fatballs · 18/09/2022 21:49

1400 to lose weight (slowly) but I do a fair bit of exercise, including lifting heavy weights.

Lougle · 18/09/2022 21:50

Forgot to say, I'm at goal weight now, so just maintaining.
