To ask you if you have a sauna at home? I really want one.

Can I get one for the shed? We don't have a lot of outside room but if we get the shed empty I reckon one would fit?

I just really love a sauna and know there's a lot of health benefits.

I've googled saunas but there's so many to choose from. Different prices. Plus I wondered if we can build our own? DH is pretty handy. I'm not bad.

My friend has one- got it from Costco! It's a cabin in the garden. She loves it.

I'd love an infrared sauna so reading with interest

I have a little one. Bought it on gumtree for £100 apparently cost £1k plus new. It would fit in a small shed.

Its like a flat pack you slot all the prices into the base. Put the top on and stand it up then plug in.

Honestly I don’t use it much at all. It’s in an unheated barn aka the gym. It warms up really quickly to mid twenties and the kids will sit in there to warm up on cold wet days when we go to the gym for a bit. I have wondered about drying clothes in there.

I’d definitely consider second hand if in doubt as to use / energy costs.

Inks42 · 18/09/2022 13:09

My mother is Finnish and built one in our house (not in Finland or England) which was used every week when I lived at home.
if I didn’t live in a flat in England I would definitely build one. I prefer the wood fired stoves, but the one we had was electric and was lovely too. If you do decide to build one, ensure you get a stove where you can throw water on the stones, as a dry sauna (found in most English gyms) isn’t good for anything. It’s the steam that works the magic.

They're nothing like a sauna, shouldn't have sauna in the name really.

Mine must be odd then because it's a sauna and exactly like a sauna.

Zippedydoo123 · 18/09/2022 13:39

I used to have a plug in infra red sauna. It only lasted five years back then.

Home sauna! Hole sauna sounds very dirty…

Sounds like something Gwyneth Paltrow would have.

Its not a sauna if you can't throw water on the stones, that's the essence of sauna.

BlueOysterCult · 18/09/2022 13:52

We have a wood heated sauna in an outhouse. Nice when used but not used regularly.

dizzyupthegirl86 · 18/09/2022 13:56

I’ve thought about getting an infra red one too, seems great for the winter months and recovering from illness.

SierraSapphire · 18/09/2022 14:00

I've got an infrared one from Firzone. No idea on cost but it heats up pretty instantaneously. I use it a few times a week.

Wombat27A · 18/09/2022 14:53

I have one, got it a few years ago when I moved I to a freezer of a house & my arthritis got worse. Don't use it often but it's fab if you get a cold, stops it dead.

It's a UK company, nice lads.

Sauna from Brum...

Oh right, there's a law that says that. Silly me. I thought a sauna was the experience of the thing. Oddly, Google disagree with you. They say that a sauna uses dry heat USUALLY from hot rocks or a closed stove. Or, as mine, from infra red. Actually, throwing water on the rocks makes it a steam room, which is different from a sauna. Wikipedia, alternatively, suggests it is a place for dry or wet heat.

BTW, mine also has wet heat if I use the facility. No rocks, but a steam generator. I can use it or not as preferred.

But I'm sure you're right and everyone else is wrong. I'll demand my money back since I paid for a sauna.

Natsku · 18/09/2022 17:32

Throwing water on the rocks doesn't turn it into a steam room, steam rooms are different, set at lower temperatures and have constant steam. Sauna has always been a place with hot rocks that you throw water on, that's the key aspect, how you get the löyly.

Good heavens

head to to your sauna. You need to have some r&r time

Clearly it was a joke!

Doingprettywellthanks · 18/09/2022 17:38

Well I bloomin hope so anyway!

Clearly it clearly wasn't. The PP thinks they know best. They might need a sauna. Luckily I have one.

ShinyMe · 18/09/2022 18:12

What's the set up in your garden? How near are the neighbours? Do you really fancy going out in the garden wearing.. what, a robe? and then coming out of the sauna all hot and... what? just going back into the kitchen? I think consider that before you make a decision. I suppose it depends on how big the place is, how overlooked, where you'd walk back in to. Coming out of a sauna and jumping in a nice swimming pool, or an immediate shower is one thing but if you've got to traipse past the bins and through the living room, perhaps that's not quite as fun.

nauticant · 18/09/2022 18:32

True. Being able to create sudden spikes of intense humid heat is fundamental to the experience.

balalake · 21/09/2022 18:03

I love having a sauna but would never have one in the home. I'd be concerned about energy bills, and I appreciate the social aspect of visiting a sauna.

NM49 · 12/08/2023 21:19

Hi,

which one do you have? I’m looking for one to support arthritis too and there are so many to choose from

FastFood · 25/04/2024 10:32

My mum has one. Hasn't been used in years.

Built our own once, wasn't used much (but possibly partly as tricky/exhausted with very young DC) but lovely on occasions it was used. Have friends who use their loads (they live in a rural area up north where often really cold out).
