NHS dentistry as it currently is, I can't get my son to a dentist right now. I'm looking for some advice if there's one here!
My son's canines are coming through, currently high up on the gum line. The lip keeps catching the pointy bit and has cut it several times that has now turned to ulcers. Sticking up ulcer stuff on but it's so sore I'm wondering if there's anything else I can do that's useful?

I’m sorry he’s struggling. He needs an opinion from a dentist not a GP. As a GP there isn’t anything else I could suggest beyond pain relief/ulcer relief that you’re already doing.

There should be a dental access centre in your area. You can search online or call 111.

It comes up a lot with the current situation for lots of people with no NHS dentists but unfortunately GPs are not indemnified to treat dental problems beyond assessing that patients are not acutely unwell from an abscess for example. There is actually a law against anyone who is not a registered dentist/dental practitioner treating dental problems.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. We are lucky enough to have an NHS dentist but unless you're dying with a tooth problem it's hard to be seen at the moment with the backlog of patients. Will ring them Tues.

He will need a referral to orthodontics to have a look at his occlusion but it's basically a case of tackle the ulcers as and when they happen and it's a watch and wait for the tooth to erupt. Dental nurse here.

In the short term, bonjela* or sore mouth/throat pastilles and plenty Vitamin C to keep his immune system up to speed to prevent cuts or grazes from teeth taking too much of a hold.

*other brands are available

If he has a dentist that is your first port of call - whilst it’s upsetting he’s in pain the solution is time and ortho. treatment so he won’t be seen as an emergency but once they are through it shoud get better. A GP will not be able to help with this. Even a private dentist won’t sort the issue quickly - if you really want then private ortho. May be an option but needs an assessment to see if he’s dentally fit/ready and will take months not days to sort

Warm salty mouthwashes for the ulcers. Ring your own dentist Tuesday.

You could try dental wax on the pointy bit while you're waiting. It really helps protect against sharp bits of teeth!
