NC for very obvious reasons! This is inspired by another thread on personal hygiene that made me a little concerned

I wanted to understand if I potentially have a problem with my hygiene and if I need to do something about it!

Let me paint a scenario for you

-you get up in the morning and go through your usual routine (for me, shower, wash everywhere with shower gel, dry off, make up, brush teeth, hair, dressed)

-you then go through a normal day...no physical exercise or anything that makes you overly sweat

-go to bed. For me, I don't shower pre bed, just wash face, teeth etc then where pants to bed overnight.

-the next morning... so 24 hours after your shower and before you've got up again, your DH/partner initiates sex with foreplay.

What do you do?

For me, I would get up and go and have a little wash and freshen up if I thought this was on the cards. After 24 hours, I do have an odour and smell which would be unpleasant and concern me.

Is it normal to have a fishy unpleasant odour in the above scenario? I thought it was but now I'm wondering if it is!

....hiding behind the sofa from embarrassment...

Soap is better for cleansing that those chemical "shower gels."

With all of that plastic it's really a pity that consumers have taken to them so voraciously.

Soap is also a chemical. Hell, even water is a chemical.

Nothing wrong with shower gel! I can't use soap because no matter the brand/type, it leaves my skin horribly dry and irritated. I use the gold Sanex and a big bottle lasts for 3m+ but I'm not in the shower seven times a day.

@bellac11 exactly the same! Always used to feel so embarrassed, then realised that it’s not actually ‘me’ that smells of fish, it’s my urine. For two days after eating any white fish or prawns. God knows why. I’m really picky about eating it now 🙈. So you’re not alone!

I'm so glad you said that! If I eat fish I stink of it for a couple of days! (Breath, sweat, bits) So weird. I've stopped eating fish now because it's so horrible. I'm allergic to seafood so wonder if there's a link.

Not fishy but a sort of thick cloying meaty smell yes. But that’s not too dissimilar to a man’s bits in the same circumstances. Slap a bit of flavoured lube on it and it covers up the taste

A smell from your vagina and vulva is 100% normal - it is only a problem if it becomes offensive, when infection could be a problem.

Men are attracted by the smell of females' genitals - look at any other mammal - they merrily sniff the genitals.

All this emphasis on making sure that all natural smells are eliminated seems totally OTT to me. And the use of things like Femfresh and special vulval washes is totally unnecessary and can be harmful.

I cannot imagine leaping in the shower and washing specifically in order to prepare for sex. What is that about?

Bloody hell if men are attracted to the smell of women's genitals then why am I as a straight women not attracted to the smell of men's genitals, there's nothing worse than the smell of a man's smelly foreskin! and I have been with men that have had very good bodily hygiene and have showered twice daily but still there's always that smell. Apparently circumcised one's don't smell though is this true??.

sex is much much nicer when both people are clean. It really is. If you don't normally do it why not try and see? 😁

Circumcised penises don't smell. It's politically incorrect but I don't like natural penises at all. The foreskin is frankly quite gross. DP was circumcised as an adult and says he wouldn't change a thing. He prefers it circumcised and feels cleaner himself.

BobVanceVanceRefridgeration · 18/09/2022 13:52

Again, thanks so much for all the comments.

This is like a revelation at over 40 to be honest.

I do think I need to look into what the smell actually is and where it's coming from. My urine issue is down to repeated utis post birth. Am currently on a cocktail of D Manosse (sp?), probiotic tablets for vaginal health and estrogen. I'm wondering if this my sort out the hormone balance that many suspect may be an issue

Interestingly I've just been for a wee (I only tend to leak at night) and have a slight discharge as I'm ovulating-absolutely no smell whatsoever.

I'd assume if I had BV the smell would build up quite quickly? Think I'll get one of those swab tests someone recommended.

And to @99redballoonsgobyy my husband is circumcised and has no smell other than some sweat occasionally (but will always have a wash pre sex if he thinks oral sex is on the cards!!)

Erm yes of course I would smell, pee and fischarge has been coming out all day 😆😆 Definitely agree with you and would freshen up too. It's respectful.

Bestcatmum · 18/09/2022 13:57

I only smell if I don't drink enough water. As long as I drink 3 litres a day I smell ok. Brown urine from dehydration does smell fishy sorry TMI I know.
Try drinking more water and seeing if that helps.

This is interesting as I have some issues with my urinary tract that contribute to utis and means I never quite drink enough so will up this

For those that smell of fish if they eat fish, it is a recognised condition called Trimethylaminuria
there will be other things that may trigger you too like certain nuts or vegetables.

Forpoxsake · 18/09/2022 14:03

After going to toilet I use a baby wipe or pour some water in a cup over my vulva to clean but also to clean any stale leakage

charliee112 · 18/09/2022 14:11

bellac11 · 18/09/2022 10:59

No one ever believes me when I say I have this issue if I eat fish, but I dont have it any other time unless I wear underwear or clothes in bed, I try not to.

Ive read about it online, people who cant metabolise fish and end up smelling like that, its particularly bad with white fish and prawns etc. Its not BV

I have this when I eat fish. My wee smells of fish as well the morning after 😷

Pudmyboy · 18/09/2022 14:36

1994girl · 18/09/2022 09:16

Do not use femfresh as it makes your PH out of balance and more prone to BV. (From experience and doctor)

This. Not to be outing, I work in a role that has to do with vaginal health, and femfresh is seen as notorious for triggering BV. So are pH balanced soaps: any soap or shower gel also.
Most cases of BV sort themselves out within a week if the vagina is left alone.
Often metronidazole is used to treat it which means antibiotics are used to treat something that is an imbalance not an infection.
Balance Activ and the like can be very helpful as a preventive if you know you get BV say, before/after your period.

Its helpful to know its not just us

However im interested in the concept that its the urine because Im not sure mine is, I will pay more attention to this, but the frustrating thing is that any time its talked about (and thats not often) others will insist its BV which it isnt

I get embarrassed because if someone gives me a lift in their car for example, when I get up off a fabric seat you can detect it, or at least I can. Awful

Just incase you missed my post have a look at Trimethylaminuria on the NHS website, I know someone who has it and they have the fish odour in their sweat and urine.

Not fishy or in any way repellent, don't think that's normal, but normal not clean sweaty type smell is normal. I shower every night before bed without fail, some mornings not straight away if I'm going to be exercising/doing housework, going for a long walk, outdoors activity straight away. I think going to bed not clean is a bit grim! And likewise getting up and not showing if you are going to work (office based- looking presentable) or going out to socialize, not overly active, is a bit grim!

You'd find me very grim then! (But in real life I doubt you'd know!)

Yes thats very helpful, I didnt know it had a name!

It doesnt seem to come out anywhere else on my body though, I will pay a bit more attention now

It only happens after I have had fish. Be in the morning first wee and then it's gone by the evening. Any other time there's no smell 🙈
