Police-Can you join with drugs record?
keeprunning55 · 18/09/2022 07:43
My ds was 15 when found with class A drugs at school. He was cautioned and told it would be off his record in 6 months.
He turned his life around, counselling for ptsd from being attacked led him down the drugs path.
All is well, but now wants to join the police. Do you know if he will be able to? It was 8 years ago now and he has a good degree and great a level results. It seems quite vague when you look at the police website.
Am I being unreasonable?

Well considering they let murderers and rapists join their ranks I don't see why not.

He will have to declare this on his application. Each case is considered individually on it's merits so it's up to whoever is vetting the applications. It isn't an automatic no though.

Not those who have been convicted they don't. And there's no way to exclude people because they might be future offenders - that way you couldn't employ anyone.
Your DS needs to disclose it ASAP, alongside what he has done as rehabilitation. As he was a juvenile, and the offence is 'spent' for nearly all other purposes, they can exercise discretion - but they will look at all factors and he might have to agree to random drug testing for a period (possibly quite a lengthy one)

I work for the police. You have to declare any cautions you have had, even those of family members too.
