To go out to dinner after a tooth extraction?

I know the advice is soft food but if I am feeling okay, can I eat normally on the other side same day?

We're going to a seafood restaurant so I'm thinking moules frites should be manageable - small bites, on one side Confused but someone whose been there before might be able to tell me.

Gasping for a glass of wine but desperate to avoid dry socket Shock so I'm guessing that's out of the equation.

DH had a tooth removed recently, and pain aside felt quite sick and woozy from the sedation/local anaesthetic - and normally he's pretty robust. He was sick of yogurt and lukewarm soup after a while, but not worth the risk of dry socket. Like a pp, his jaw was also pretty stiff. Also might be worth laying a towel on your pillow, as he had blood on his pillow for a night or two afterwards.

I think it depends on the person! My brother and I went to McDonalds and ate burgers on the way home from his wisdom teeth extraction.

Happyhapoydog · 17/09/2022 13:54

mine was second in pain only to childbirth! It’s really, really sore and you need to be very careful.

I had a complicated tooth extraction(dentist said it was going to be 5 min job but 2 hours later I was still there! Was not nice) day before a dinner, mouth was swollen on one side but I still went and I was fine.

Roselilly36 · 17/09/2022 14:01

@CornishGem1975 aww you poor thing, and on your holiday too. DH had an extraction that was really difficult, his face was terribly swollen. Hope you are better soon.

Everyone is different I have long roots so it's pain killers for 3 weeks every time. .....the ibuprofen long lasting ones plus paracetamol gets me through the night but eating is tricky.

catlovingdoctor · 17/09/2022 14:08

Final year dental student here...
Echo everything above. Avoid alcohol for a few days as it impairs the healing process.
The blood clot which has formed is very delicate for 24h after an extraction; its the only barrier between the socket and all the bacteria in your mouth.
Stay home, rest up, and stick to cool and soft food for the rest of the day.

Depends on how soon after. Absolutely no if you can’t feel anything. But I had a molar removed in the morning and ate a regular dinner that evening. Chewed on the other side obviously.

Ive had dry socket and would describe it as the most intense overwhelming pain ive ever experienced. I literally couldn’t even think straight it was so painful.

so yea, do everything you can to avoid dry socket.

gamerchick · 17/09/2022 14:59

Dry socket is not worth anything. Not everyone gets it and take the risk. Those who do get it, never forget it and wish they hadnt.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 17/09/2022 15:03

I found when I had teeth out that the effect of The anaesthetic lasted quite a long time lulling me into a false sense about the pain. When it finally wore off it was incredibly sore and bruised

its really not worth it. Save the nice dinners for when it’s properly healed

Always4Brenner · 17/09/2022 15:06

Don’t even go there as others have said Dry Socket is utter hell on earth and can last weeks. I’m lucky never had it but know of the pain.

GoneWithTheWine1 · 17/09/2022 15:13

Dry socket is worse than child birth on repeat.

Go to the restaurant but don't drink alcohol whatever you do and when you get home rinse with salt water.

CornishGem1975 · 17/09/2022 15:43

DH has been out and bought me lots of creme caramel dessert and chocolate mousse so I'll roll with that today!

I had KFC about 2 hours after mine

ladydoris · 17/09/2022 18:55

Keep your cool. It's only for a few days. You want to keep it healthy down there. All the best op.

CornishGem1975 · 17/09/2022 19:03

Yeah just annoying because we're on a (short) holiday @ladydoris that we've waited for all year, so frustrating. But I'm settling down with a bowl of mashed potatoes now Confused

Kind of wish I'd gone out and enjoyed dinner last night because today I can't open my mouth wider than a grape Confused Just managed to squish some scrambled egg through the hole. Not too painful but the swelling is immense.

As long as you're not in much pain. Get the ice packs out maybe.
