I need some scaring. Nothing is working with my weight loss journey. I feel like I need a kick up the ass.

Please tell me some health scares or just general things that suddenly went away or became easier when you lost weight.

eg, my knees hurt. And I’m sure if I lost the weight then they wouldn’t hurt as much.

Have you ever been pregnant? I’m ok weight wise, but can remember feeling like a whale before kids were born. Walking up stairs was knackering, joints hurt etc. Then overnight I lost 2.5 stone and wow… I felt everything was so much better. Good luck.

KiraKiraHikaru · 15/09/2022 19:27

Yes twice!

I lost 5 stone in 8 months and have maintained a healthy bmi for 3 years. For me focusing on health helped. I focused on eating lots of lean protein, fruit & veg so felt better pretty much straight away. I’m able to walk miles and am much more active and less tired. I don’t have to worry dr will dismiss x complaint as due to me being overweight. I was never seatbelt extension/unable to fit on rides territory (was a size 20 at biggest) but everything is much easier and more comfortable.

Bestcatmum · 15/09/2022 19:29

My hip has worn out and I need a hip replacement. I need to lose 3 stone urgently to get around as I'm working full time for another 7 years.

namechanged221 · 15/09/2022 19:30

Go for a liver scan.

Or ask for a liver blood panel test.

You most likely have fatty liver disease, if you've been overweight for some time you may already have irreversible liver damage.

Dixiechickonhols · 15/09/2022 19:31

Knees is 1lb off and equivalent of 4lb off knees I think.
Think about carrying a toddler or child - I was doing that all day everyday no wonder I was knackered.

JackandSam · 15/09/2022 19:35

Ummmm. I feel better in myself, as in I prefer how I look, how clothes look on me. But that's it. No real noticeable difference, not in health. If anything I was healthier before (I now have depression, bursitis and menieres disease!). However the risks are greater the longer you are overweight. The correlation between poor health and obesity is fairly clear, though it may be due to lack of physical activity and less healthy diet rather than the fat itself.

OP - warning - post with TMI coming -

friends in the NHS tell me that women who are significantly overweight put themselves at risk for cervical cancer, as they cannot physically spread their legs wide enough to have a smear test done.

Cervical cancer is one of the more treatable cancers if caught in the early stages.

flowerycurtain · 15/09/2022 19:38

I lost 5 stone 10 years ago and have kept it off. Virtually every day I feel proud of myself for the following reasons:
I feel energetic
I feel so healthy
I rarely get ill
i have energy to play with my kids
i have the energy to be the best parent I can be
I look good in clothes

I used to be ill all the time with coughs and colds. I'd feel so sluggish and horrid. I feel amazing 90% of the time now.

you can do it!!!

Fatty liver disease leads to liver cancer, one of the deadliest cancers.

My sister died from this, alongside bile duct cancer, she was extremely overweight.

No idea if it was related, but it's worth being aware.

RaininSummer · 15/09/2022 19:39

How fat would that be though? I am pretty tubby and not had that problem.

QuizzlyBears · 15/09/2022 19:40

I went to a theme park, really struggled to get the harness down over me on a rollercoaster and spent the longest few minutes of my life convinced and fucking terrified that I was going to fly out and die. That was my ‘something needs to change’ moment.

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 15/09/2022 19:40

My dad has been very overweight for years, he is now 60 but since being about 52 he has been told his risk of a stroke is very high. He has a bad knee which needs replacing, it hurts to walk constantly. He has been told if he lost weight the pressure through his knee would reduce and his pain would be much less. But he still can't keep weight off.

cptartapp · 15/09/2022 19:43

Diabetes in women, often caused by excess weight, means that you are six times more likely to have a stroke or heart attack. Let alone other cardiovascular conditions such as dementia.

KiraKiraHikaru · 15/09/2022 19:44

I’m not mega fat. But definitely overweight.

I only lost 2 stone, and feel like I'm in my early 30s. I'm in my 50s.
My lovely mum died of an obesity related illness when I actually was in my early 30s. She was just out of her 50s.

Hotandflustered · 15/09/2022 19:49

Hi,

Being able to tie shoelaces and have a shower properly.

I also think I contributed toward the suspension going on my little car last week.

I started my new job feeling like a slob - went to get some big girls black trousers from marks & sparks last weekend where I was too late for online ordering from Evans or Yours, gutted, could not buy petite/short past size 18 in a brand-new store of M&S and the supermarkets I resorted to had none in either. I had to resort to legging type trousers which fortunately was ok with the industry I'm now in.

But being 20 stone isn't fun, I must do something about it. I fear I'm too late being a diabetic I think oedema has set in, in the legs and feet. I've been ignoring the diabetic nurse. Totally feel like I'm on borrowed time and or deluding myself.

I might restart the weight loss jabs tomorrow. A tip I did see on here which seems good logically was to have a weekly food box to avoid going to the supermarket.

xxx

AlmostAJillSandwich · 15/09/2022 19:49

I'm 17 stone with 5 to lose, good luck!
Day to day, you're much more likely to suffer stress urinary incontinence when you're overweight. It noften improves with weightloss as there's less pressure on your bladder.

Erm. I went a size 22+ and could spread the legs just fine. To not be able to one would have to be on EXTREME scale of morbid obesity. The issues are bit different. Firstly studies showed obese women were less likely to actually go and secondly, the screening may produce unviable samlpes more often than when not obese, but that is not because of leg spread.

I get op wanted scaring, but facts might be better than fiction...

cakewench · 15/09/2022 19:57

How people have fared with being overweight often comes down to age/ time having been overweight. A young person hasn't had the years put in taking their toll (wearing down of joints for example) and can still feel quite good in themselves.

Diabetes is a big one for many people, usually your mid 40s is about when that occurs if you've been obese your whole life. I, personally, found my knee was starting to hurt (I've struggled with weight, have been anywhere from upper healthy BMI to just above obese) and I already have a bad back (had back surgery when I was young, and while I can't prove it, I've always suspected it was due to my obesity at the time).

People always say to put on a backpack with x amount of weights in it to see just how tiring it is to carry it around, and it's really true. I am not perfect and will likely always struggle with my weight, but I do always feel physically better when my weight is lower than when it is higher. I sleep better and I don't feel like shit just trying to get up the stairs.

It only gets harder the older you are, like many things. I'm 45 fwiw.

Are you having treatment?

Msloverlover · 15/09/2022 20:03

Is counselling an option? Getting to the root of why you overeat seems like a sensible starting point, otherwise you are only treating the symptom rather than the cause.

KiraKiraHikaru · 15/09/2022 20:04

No no one will help me. I just keep getting reffered to this weird chat room where no one replies.

OP if you have an ED, I'm not sure this thread is the most helpful thing for you.
Your eating issues are not going to be resolved by people scaring you and could cause you more harm mentally.
I hope you are able to access proper help to tackle your illness. I wish you all the very best.
