To be sadder about Eddie Butler than the Queen? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Just heard the news that Eddie Butler has died in his sleep while on a trek in Peru. Raising money for prostate cancer. Only 65.

Now he is someone that^^ I really will miss. The voice of so many rugby matches as well as many other occasions which required the gravitas that he could bring to voiceovers. Only yesterday a segment about Westminster Hall was played on the BBC with him doing the voiceover. A sad day. 😢

Me too. It is too sad. Only 65.
We will never hear that gorgeous voice in future live rugby games anymore 😔

Surely we can be sad about both losses? Grief isn't a finite emotion , we can share it between as many loved ones as we want to..!

balalake · 15/09/2022 20:56

May he rest in peace and thoughts for his family and all who knew him. No age at all.

OctopusBreath · 15/09/2022 20:57

I'm Welsh. Not a fan of rugby at all but this is really sad- Eddie Butler was a legend and was quite active politically in recent years. It's a great loss.

FartOutLoudDay · 15/09/2022 20:58

Oh gosh, I hadn’t heard the news until I saw this thread. Can’t believe it. Watching rugby just won’t be the same at all. I’m with you OP, a real shock and sadness to this one.

Absolutely! And I didn't say I'm not sad about the Queen, just that I'm sadder about Eddie Butler.

Rugby commentary will never be the same without him.
He had a magnificent voice for broadcasting and his partnership with Brian Moore was the best.

Speaking of Brian Moore...😢

I may have misinterpreted the OP and I may generally be waaay of base here, but my feeling is that there are many more random celebs that have touched or been a part of people’s lives to a far greater extent than the Queen.
For most, I suspect, she was just in the background not really impacting on our lives in any meaningful way. The apparent outpouring of grief are just people (not all, mind) wanting to be a part of a historical moment rather than mourning the loss of someone.

A brilliant wordsmith, an amazing player, an Oxford Graduate (French and Spanish), a patriot and proud Welshman. We've shed a tear in this household - Eddie Butler will absolutely be missed.

RIP Eddie. Cwsg yn dda, Cawr o Gymru. You are already sorely missed. Daffodil

Olamiamore · 15/09/2022 22:59

I'm Welsh and totally shocked by this. Eddie and Bill McClaren were the voices of rugby for my lifetime so far. He seemed like such a lovely man.

I do understand what you mean as it's more of a shock than the Queen, given she was 96 and clearly frail. However I wouldn't say I'm more saddened by Eddie passing but it feels more personal somehow - perhaps as he is similar in age to my dad who is also an old Welsh rugby player.

Needesppressonow · 16/09/2022 07:17

I’m Welsh by the way but my English husband is equally as shocked and sad. I loved listening him and Brian Moore as a double act commentary team

I'm waiting for someone else who is Welsh to come along and back me up on this. He was a legend, taken far too soon. I'm sure even if you don't know his name, you would recognise his voice from many major sporting and national, occasions.

Here's one example

I'm Welsh and yes it's sad but I feel the Queen has been a bigger part of our lives and I don't think you can compare the diplomatic work she's done for all those years to commenting on rugby.

ParanoidGynodroid · 16/09/2022 07:35

You can be sad about whomever you like. People touch our lives in different ways and mean different things to us. Part of the shock and sadness with Eddie is that he was not very old. The queen was a monumental figure, and few of us will have known anything other than her reign; however, she was 96, so it's been expected.

My old dog has not long left... when he goes I know I'll be much sadder than I have been for recent human family members who have passed!

DrivingCadillacsInOurDreams · 16/09/2022 07:41

Totally with you on this!! His death has really shocked me, such a loss to the rugby world - and not just for the Welsh!

I'm not comparing the work they've done, and I'm not speaking for anyone else. I'm just saying that personally I feel sadder about him than I do about the Queen.
