To ask about bottle making

Ok so everyone has their own opinions on this but I just wanted to know...

Is it safe to pre make bottles of formula and put them in the fridge? Has anyone had any issues with it? My dd is 5 months old and prefers milk at room temp. Now she's having bigger bottles this is taking ages to cool down. I think it would be easier to pre make them, store them in the fridge then warm them up in a jug of boiling water to get them to room temperature. Would this be ok?

This is what I did. I used a bottle warmer and 5 mins did the trick.
another thing I did was have a thermos of boiled water for the day and made bottles with that.

I personally wouldn't. I also don't like the prep machine so we do our own thing.

Example- if dc is taking 180ml

  • pour 40ml boiled water into bottle and mix powder in.
  • add 140ml cold water from fridge and mix. Job done.
  • use newly boiled water to top up fridge water.

I did. I know it goes against the guidelines technically but it was a game changer for us in terms of ease. I used to make up 6 bottles every evening and store them at the back of the fridge for the next day so they were all used within 24 hrs.

Mine are grown now but we made up the bottles to hot to melt the powder and then added cold water from the fridge to cool them.

Yes I do this, and DS drinks cold straight from the fridge, no warming. When we go out I pack them in a cool bag with ice packs.

Babyboomtastic · 15/09/2022 10:59

I did it, making then up for 24hrs. Absolutely no issues and it was very easy. Making bottles was a 10m job once a day (which can be shared so even less than that really).

I also got them to temperature with a short blast in the microwave (making sure it had a good swirl to dissipate any hot spots and being careful over time etc). Hungry to fed within 20 seconds!

Ps: i took chilled bottles in insulated containers that kept then cold, to bed, and got a cheap serving hand microwave for the bedroom. The way getting a bottle ready at night was as easy as popping for a wee.

It's fine as long as they're stored in the fridge for no longer than 24 hours. (Also don't store them in the fridge door) it's one of the methods NHS recommend.

chickenwings22 · 15/09/2022 11:19

So another option would be to keep cool boiled water in the fridge then top up the boiling water/formula with it?

She has been taking prescription milk for CMPA since 6 weeks and as the powder is sterile you can make them up with room temp water. In fact you're not meant to put boiling water near it as it kills off the pro biotic in the milk. So making normal formula seems like a big change again now.

I make 5 up at a time and store them in the fridge, warm them up quickly when needed in bottle warmer or leave them out for 15 mins or so to be a bit less fridge cold before feeding my baby.
I know it’s not what they say now, but they did say this was fine until recently and to be honest I just don’t know how I would cope making them up as and when! The baby would just be screaming as she does when she is hungry! Especially in the night.

I do actually have a nuby rapid cool but I haven’t used it as we are never really out all day and I personally think it’s fine just to take the bottles out of the fridge if it’s only a few hours. I always make sure the bottles are properly clean and sterilised first.

I think professionals just have to say these things even if there is only the tiniest risk of something, but as it’s a very common method I think a lot of people do it still. Whatever you feel comfortable with really after weighing things up!

Youdoyoutoday · 15/09/2022 11:26

It will be fine, did it with first and had a bottle machine for my second

5zeds · 15/09/2022 13:29

If it’s not supposed to be in boiling water then put a splash of cold in, add hot water, add powder, mix, add more cold water to get to the temp you want. Found it didn’t melt unless it was in warm water.
half boiling half ice water is 50 degrees
