Is it a God?

A higher power?

The Government? (I know).

Yourself?

Others? Family? Pets?

A new day? (I hear the song too).

When you are feeling desolate and beyond exhausted with it all, what pulls you back? Mash? Netflix? Mumsnet?

What can you ultimately rely on?

I believe that everything happens for a reason, even if that reason takes years to come to light. I don't believe in any god, but religions do fascinate me. My children and dogs are my world (and DH though it's usually him im pissed off with 😂) so it's them I go to/look at to bring me back to myself.

I completely disagree. That suggests some guiding hand, a plan. Things happen. Other things happen as a result, eg divorce followed by new and better relationship. That's just time passing and events occurring due to thousands of individual choices and decisions. I worship at the feet of Terry Pratchett...lots of quotable stuff but I like "there isn't a way things should be. There's just what happens and what we do".
I think a lot of the anxiety, angst and depression now so prevalent is caused by this wrongheaded idea that things "should" be a certain way and they're not. You just deal with what's in front of you. And honestly, I don't think too much about global issues I cannot affect. I'm informed about them, and have opinions but I don't feel emotional about them. My energies are tied up in my 2 kids and my job and doing it all as a single parent. Short term goals and survival. That'll do.

If I was in an accident tomorrow, and lost my legs, would you genuinely believe that I was half the person I used to be?

No, because your personality is in your brain, not in your legs. And it's your personality that makes you the person you are. Once your brain is dead, then what makes you you is gone.

Do not Godless people today believe that (e.g.) a man can turn into a woman, among other absurd beliefs which overtly deny science?

Well I certainly don't, and I'm as godless as they come! I'm not sure where you got the idea that religious = doesn't believe transwomen are women and atheist = does believe it. The religious Amercsn right might be a major force in the gender critical ranks in the US, but I don't think that's remotely true in the UK.

You make a good point that the decline of religions is hardly a new thing, but then that does not mean there cannot be a correct one where false ones have failed.

But what do you mean by 'failed '? Failed to do what? There is no more evidence of the existence of any one god over any of the others who have risen and fallen in popularity. Religions are created (by people), they gather supporters, they wane and eventually die out. Christianity has had a very good run, but it's definitely in decline. Who knows whether it will survive until humanity is wiped out - I guess it might limp on in small pockets of a few countries.

I’m not 100% sure that I believe in God - but I do pray. And there have been many times that my prayers appear to have been answered.
I try to do good in life. Don’t set out to hurt people, and try to show compassion.

When I’m down or life is very stressful I try to reconnect with my values, and also to take care of my body and mind.

I count myself as a Christian. Albeit, sometimes not a very good or diligent one!

I wasn't born into a religious family and when I talk about my relationship with God I think it doesn't sound very natural, or I can sort of hear how it sounds to folk who don't believe so it puts me off saying it!

I have seen and felt how when I take the time to invest in learning about God, and Jesus, and the Bible it has a very real very positive affect on my life, and a ripple effect.
