What if one of the 6 guards has a cough/ passes out/ gets the shits/ needs a wee? 6 hours is a looooong time.

will those giant candles last 4 days or will they be switched out?

was the flag/ cushion/ crown glued/ tied to the coffin as despite movement it did not move a smidge (even when pearls were swinging violently!)

im sure there’s other but help a girl out!

I want to know why there were horses with no riders and why they looked so stressed

And why the wags didn't walk.

And really, mostly why any of it is happening?

VainAbigail · 14/09/2022 22:19

Aren’t the guards changing every 20 mins?! Or maybe I misheard!

Grandeur · 14/09/2022 22:25

I'm also confused by the guard situation. I heard something about 6 hours too, but I kept seeing the guards change over frequently on the livestream?

123rd · 14/09/2022 22:28

The four guarding her are changing every 20 mins it said on the news

Also said it won't just be military, members of family too

JamMakingWannaBe · 14/09/2022 22:28

There is a spare guard incase something happens to one of the main ones.

They are on a 20 minute shift.

I have no idea about the candles.

The clergy reading prayers (and presumably the police, security detail) also rotate too.

mondaytosunday · 14/09/2022 22:30

The 'wags' are not blood related so entirely appropriate that the immediate family walked snd they did not.
I'm sure the crown is secured in some fashion, but the flag just may be weighted.

Topgub · 14/09/2022 22:35

I'm sure most of the others walking weren't blood related either

Anne's husband isn't

Fruitbatdancer · 14/09/2022 22:47

Ooo interesting I just believed what I heard about the 6 hours- makes sense if they rotate during the 6 hours I’ll have to watch the live stream.

my son asked if they still kill bears for the hats? I said I’m sure they have enough bear by now? (I assume they don’t get to keep their hats and pass them down)

also some of the guards have swan feathers in their hats which are enormous! I didn’t know swans had suck big ones!

im fascinated by the positive and detail of it all!
(also the dandruff that I though I saw on Welbys collar!)

Logistics not positive!!

Crunchymum · 14/09/2022 22:50

I thought the horses seemed stressed.

Wonder what would have happened if one of them had buckeroo'd or got spooked. Could the horses have run off with the coffin? 😬

FriedasCarLoad · 14/09/2022 22:52

The coffin was designed to incorporate clips which secure the crown etc in place.

Isonthecase · 14/09/2022 22:53

The bear hats are made from bears that are culled anyway. Apparently some hats are quite old but they bring in new ones as required. They're meant to require a lot of upkeep, apparently takes hours to get it sorted again if you drop one.

No idea on the other questions! Fascinating how it all works though.

FourChimneys · 14/09/2022 22:58

I worry about the bearskins and the queen's friendship with Paddington.

Are those white floaty things on some of the hats swan feathers?

I expect there were weights sewn into the edges of the flag.

Fruitbatdancer · 14/09/2022 23:28

But even with weights, if it’s a slippy varnished oak top, when the 8 men (who made me feel old as the looked like kids!) carried her off the gun carridge it didn’t move a millimetre! I watched with one eye covered expecting it to whizz off! It’s magic sourcery I reckon! Or double sided gaffa tape…
on Monday, will they do the American thing of folding the flag up? And putting it in a little triangle? Will all the gaffa tape then be exposed?
so. Many. Questions.

also interesting about the bear hats! Who/ where is culling bears I wonder!?

OP posts:
Fruitbatdancer · 14/09/2022 23:29

And yes some are swan feathers, some are ostrich!

Ps if anyones watching live feed in the morning can you let me know about the candles?! I reckon they were about 3ft tall to start with! Based on my ones at home I reckon they’ll need replacing tomorrow afternoon 😂

If they're like the ones we have in church, they're not wax candles but vessels that hold oil and have a wick so they'll never burn down.

Bobbybobbins · 14/09/2022 23:44

I don't think Camilla could walk that far (understandably!) and I think they have put her in a car each time with at least one other person to drive.

RandomMess · 14/09/2022 23:44

I'm sure I read a number of years ago they wear phasing in artificial bearskin?

cardibach · 14/09/2022 23:46

Re: the horses pulling the gun carriage. The riders are postillions - we only use them where there is no possibility of a driving seat here. They sit in the left horse so they can control the second with their (more commonly) dominant right hand, though they’ll have better control of the horse they are on. This style us3d to be common in mainland Europe. When you drive a carriage from a seat with reins to the horses, you have better control of the right hand of the pair due to the (usually) dominant right hand. This is why in the continent they drive on the right, passing left side to left side as there’s more control, whereas in Britain we drive on the left, passing right side to right side.
Fascinating horse facts right there.
(They we’re probs stressed from having to do such a controlled walk for such a distance).

bloodyplanes · 15/09/2022 00:06

It is traditional that only the male members of the family walk in the procession, the obvious exception to this was Princess Anne. It was only male members who walked behind the Duke of Edinburghs coffin apart from Anne!

Dilbertian · 15/09/2022 00:16

The older hats are bearskin, but new ones are synthetic. (They must have sort of anti-static device built in!)

The crown is very heavy. About 2.5lb IIRC. If the flag is backed with anti-slip material, neither is likely to go anywhere.

I thought that in the UK we drive on the left so that we can fight using our sword arm (usually right), and that they do the opposite on the Continent because Napoleon wanted them to be different to the English. He also tried to establish a French zero meridian in Paris, because he didn't want to use the English one, but it didn't catch on.

RandomMess · 15/09/2022 06:37

Just remembered they chose horses for their size and look at the start of their training/service and less so for their temperament.

They will be out of routine doing this and probably knackered and picking up general heightened stress.

WhoWants2Know · 15/09/2022 07:44

A guard did faint last night. It was reported in one of the papers this morning.
