Cancer treatment being cancelled on monday

pinok · 14/09/2022 19:01

I’ve seen some people say their cancer treatment has been cancelled on Monday and delayed by a month..

Surely a month can make a difference for a cancer patient? 😳

Really surprised this hasn’t been regarded as essential

Say where? Who?

I'm not saying it's not true but it seems a but vague. My mum has stage 4 cancer and her treatment is unaffected. Why would they have to wait a month for one day of closure, even if it did close?

In Scotland, it's been said that only some GP surgeries and routine clinics that are not time critical are not going ahead.

Confusedmeanderings · 15/09/2022 02:36

Part of my cancer treatment has been cancelled, but it's been rearranged for later in the week. The issue is that next week I have lots of appointments for things in different places - hydrotherapy in one place, blood tests in another, oncologist in another, covid vaccination in yet another - and juggling them all is doing my head in.

DaveMinion · 15/09/2022 03:21

I work in operating theatres. We are carrying on with all cancer lists but cancelled others. Realistically that means that 5 out of 8 elective theatres are still going ahead. So it's not everywhere.

SierraSapphire · 15/09/2022 04:21

Consultants' clinics that are being cancelled at my hospital, and they are often on a weekly cycle, so blood test one day, consultant appointment the next to review blood test results and sign off chemo, chemo the next day after that. It's not easy to fit a half day of appointments elsewhere (other work, clinic space) with that short notice. If other staff are unable to work the consultant can't come in an run clinic on their own. Appointments can be booked a couple or even more weeks in advance (mine are booked until the end of November). A month seems a long time for a delay but not inconceivable. I was originally told four weeks for my surgery but it ended up being eight because there were four bank holidays in the month or so after my diagnosis at the beginning of April.

Sorry @Confusedmeanderings - it's a nightmare juggling priorities isn't it?

UnclePastuso · 15/09/2022 05:07

I work in a cancer department. Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy are running. The junior
doctors are off unless on call, the nurse specialists are off. Consultants have been given the option of rescheduling clinic and taking the day off, doing the clinic in the departments that are open and taking time back or cash but on the understanding there is limited nursing/admin/pharmacy support.

If you work a job where your big clinics or meetings are on a Monday you lose so many appointments because of bank holidays but people do still need seen. Always a nightmare and this one particularly with the short notice. I think people will do different things. Not sure if the patients will be pleased or not pleased about appointments going ahead/being cancelled.

malificent7 · 15/09/2022 06:46

I would be annoyed if i was a patient. I work in health care and I'm hoping to work to get the pay.

CatchYouOnTheFlippetyFlop · 15/09/2022 06:50

It's fucking pathetic OP.

Can't believe people's health is going on the back-burner just because a nearly 100 year old woman popped her clogs.

Infuriating.

Druyhbf · 15/09/2022 06:52

My friends operation was cancelled too because of the bank holiday. She was told it will now be in november.

Mybeautifulfriend22 · 15/09/2022 06:59

My trust is trying to carry on as much as possible. Not all areas can open but more than a normal bank holiday.

I think our theatre lists are proceeding on the whole. Some staff will struggle due to schools closing but other staff will step in for the extra pay! Although everyone’s knackered from doing extra on catch up for the last year! It’s also been non stop for months and months with acute.

MyLovelyPen · 15/09/2022 07:09

My mum has been waiting months for an op to sort a debilitating condition.

Its been cancelled.

Shes devastated and very angry.

rookiemere · 15/09/2022 07:13

It's awful. I know there is protocol etc. etc. but people have already been waiting far too long for medical treatment due to the lockdowns, and surely that needs to be taken into account when making these decisions.

nachoavocado · 15/09/2022 07:18

It's really bad. I can understand routine catch up follow up appointments with no treatment involved, just a final sign off. Those appointments that can wait say a week or two, fine. But anything that actually requires treatment being delayed, that just makes me angry. People wait long enough.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 15/09/2022 07:21

When I was having chemo it was every Monday. If that fell on a bank holiday, which it did one week, it was moved to later in the week. So it's not a new or queen specific thing.

Radiotherapy went ahead every day. But chemo not on bank holidays where I was.

carefullycourageous · 15/09/2022 07:22

I think given the treatment delays generally, it is very poor for any surgery or vital treatment to be cancelled.

I can't actually believe how big the NHS backlogs are, it's mindblowingly bad. The government are happy to leave us to it.

CharlotteRose90 · 15/09/2022 07:26

It’s absolutely outrageous. The queen wouldn’t have wanted this at all. It’s all about people getting a day off and total shit. I’ve waited 2 years for an appointment and it’s been cancelled . It’s a funeral not a wedding. Don’t close everything.

Proof it actually happened? Oh, wait ...not needed to post angry rant

MyLovelyPen · 15/09/2022 07:31

@entropynow you want me to post my mums personal details on line to prove to you her op has been cancelled? 🙄

Or just google it - hospitals all over the country have cancelled operations so maybe educate yourself.

BluOcty · 15/09/2022 07:34

This just seems like the opposite of what the Queen would actually want. She was such a keep calm and carry on generation.

OneFrenchEgg · 15/09/2022 07:35

Surely the Queen knew this would happen, I thought she signed off on it all.

lunar1 · 15/09/2022 07:40

My husband's NHS clinics are going ahead, they book 4.5 months in advance so any cancellations can't be rebooked for another 4.5 months time.

I know the clerical staff have been ringing everyone to make sure the know to still come and adding in new patients where there are people who want to cancel.

iamjustlurking · 15/09/2022 07:47

We have cancelled most elective surgery and appointments, but all cancers will go ahead
To those complaining it's disgusting, please give a second thought to Theatre staff trying to juggle child care etc. With it being a bank holiday. Most people are on their knees in the NHS trying to implement Covid recovery and manage the huge volume of often inappropriate GP referrals because they have not been seen f2f.
Most people work in NHS because they care not because its financially rewarding.
Yes I fully understand its frustrating when you have waited for surgery to be delayed further, however hopefully it has been scheduled with clinical priority and would be re-dated as such and not just on the next available list. We in NHS did not unfortunately get a heads up this was happening.

ceecee32 · 15/09/2022 07:50

My Monday appointment is now Tuesday, cant fault anything they have done for me

Can't you read? Oh, wait.........not needed to ignore other people's posts.

Snugglemonkey · 15/09/2022 07:52

I think it is wrong for any kind of treatment to be affected. There are so many delays with covid, it is unacceptable to add to the burden. The nhs should run as usual.
