Midwife home visits

hi lovely mnetters

I have horrific hyperemesis at the moment and find going anywhere to be really hard and exhausting.

can I ask for all my midwife prenatal appointments to be at home? Until the sickness eases off? Just wondering if anyone else has had home visits.

TIA

No, it wasn’t an option for me as she had a caseload of ladies to see on a fixed time/day, you can only ask tho. Hope you feel better soon.

underneaththeash · 14/09/2022 14:30

I did - but we paid!

i don’t think you have a hope OP.

TwinMama88 · 14/09/2022 14:32

Can't help, but I can offer solidarity as I also had HG and omg it's the worst, I totally understand why you'd rather stay home. I could hardly lift my head or keep water down.
Take care, because I ended up in hospital on a drip as my body was severely dehydrated.

As a midwife I’d say very, very little chance. I could see someone every 15 mins in a clinic…..I’m not going to get through everyone if I’m driving to houses. I do sympathise, I had hyperemesis and travelled everywhere with plastic bags to puke into.

sayanythingelse · 14/09/2022 14:35

Mine offered home visits. I live close to the surgery but apparently she's had trouble getting a room there. I've had some appointments at the hospital or a large medical centre nearby instead.

I refused the home appointments as we're moving and our house is an utter bomb site!

QuebecBagnet · 14/09/2022 14:46

It’s definitely worth asking, she might pass close to your house on the way to clinic. 🤷‍♀️ Just tell her you’re struggling and see what she says. Have they got you on any medication?

YellowTreeHouse · 14/09/2022 15:12

I don’t think that’s fair to be honest; their workload is already extremely high.

I figured if some people give birth at home, a 15 minute appointment and a blood test wouldn’t be out of the question. I’ve arranged for booking to be done over the phone.

Where I work we're currently so stretched that it wouldn't be possible. Every area is different though so worth at least asking. Hope you feel better soonFlowers

Wouldloveanother · 14/09/2022 15:27

Just got a voicemail to say they’re coming to see
me at home tomorrow!

Ah that's good.
I think people don't realise sometimes just hoe poorly HG makes you.
I remember being sick so hard that I was weeing myself as well.
It literally lasted all the way through even during labour.

Imagine if everyone wanted their appointments at home 🙄

It's not everyone though - it's someone who is too unwell to leave the house.

Totally reasonable to ask. I would ask in the same situation- midwives make postnatal visits so if mine was doing one nearby I don't see why it would be a big deal for them to pop over to me.

Yes, imagine. Luckily that’s not the case as only 2% of women get HG.

Never had HG but my friend did really bad and was hospitalised a couple of times, so you have my sympathies OP 💐

That’s brilliant that someone’s coming out to see you. Ignore the snide remarks.

JustMuddlingOn · 14/09/2022 19:03

Had my baby last year (Cheshire) and most of my appointments bar the first were at home. I was quite happy to go to the surgery as I was coming out of work anyway but she seemed to prefer it and her team did most of them at home. Definitely ask because you never know.

There are lots of excuses people can use to try and get home visits.
