Thinking there is a difference in rings? More info

Hey so it's my anniversary next month and we have been married 8 years
My husband lost his ring the first year we married and I want to replace it for his anniversary
I don't work so I'm selling a handbag to buy it for him so it's a surprise

I've looked online and seen a few rings my budget is around £200

I've called a lovely jewler who my friend recommended to me and they said they can do a 9ct 3mm men court ring for £210 in white gold

I looked online and I can see a couple of better prices BUT I don't know if the ring is going to be better quality if not from a website of a sort of cheaper place
What do you think shall I get it online or from the one I called (they were very nice on phone much more helpful then the others I've called)

I want to use somewhere with a good service
I know it isn't much money but it's what I can afford and I know he will be touched

Thank you

I love your engagement ring!!
I think typical men's ring are 6mm.

mybest · 14/09/2022 13:56

3mm is very…dainty for a man’s ring. Even 4 is small

cultkid · 14/09/2022 13:57

@Anonmousse

So they told me they use medium weight, the lady is out at lunch at the moment but is going to show me the depth

Thinking I will stretch to a medium weight 4mm it's I think she said £240 to me?

Then it will feel better
I see, my rings are 18 carat I think but I adore them

They don't have such a hard life as his hands do though, although I want him to wear this on the weekend and kids and life give his hands a hard time on the weekend even if he isn't working!

All the bikes to lift and kids to haul about hey!

Oh wow I had no idea I'm so clueless

Maybe I best get the 4mm one

I know his original one was very slim too, he's just that kind of person but he is very big and he does have big hands

Thank you for this point it's very helpful for me

the carat value that governs the hardness of the gold so a 9ct ring in any colour gold is harder than an 18ct. The colour shouldnt make a difference. Buying a9ct will be relatively durable especially I not worn alongside another in (ie wome wear wit n ngagement ring)

It's simple to compare what you are getting in terms if value fir money. Ask for the Weight in grams if the item. If you are getting a heavier item for your pice you are getting a better deal deal.
Very often cheaper bands are shaped in such away that they are spared gold from the inner surface so whilst appearing similar they are very different in terms if what you get.

In jewellery buying and selling weight is always they key factor.it provides a direct comparison.

If your husband likes white gold an you are aware if coloir loss, I wouldn't personally be deleted.
Happy shopping.

I bought my wedding ring in 1986 for £18 in a jewellers sale. I've worn it everyday for the past 36yrs and it looks exactly as it did when I bought it.

If it's gold I don't see what could be different about the price, 9ct gold is 9ct gold wherever you buy it surely?

I love your sentiment and this is very relatable

My rings are not valuable and my engagement ring is second hand. I have worn it every day for 8 years and I am obsessed with it, didn't even take it off for the 5 or 6 operations I've had since then, I've always had it on and I never take it off,
It's a part of me

I'd just put out there - silicone - trendy, last for bloody ages, and you can keep your bag!

More and more people I know don't wear their rings anymore, go for something fun.

Thank you giraffe

This is another really helpful pointer

I just want good service and somewhere that we can use going forwards

That's what I mean about using a nice good jewellers instead of one online that may look better on the first glance but then you realise it isn't as robust etc

As a total novice the help on this thread has been so good

Thanks so much

Funny you should say this as I thought about a rubber ring too for work as he is a gas engineer so he has to have his hands safe all the time but I don't like that he doesn't wear a ring

I know it's morbid but his job is dangerous and I worry he will die at work with no ring on. I don't know why it gets to me

I had thought to buy him a rubber one for work and put it in the bag and then when he puts it on and thanks me ask him oh is something else in the bag? And then he can have the gold one

Have you seen those rubber ones for tradesmen?

OP, unless you have a specific reason for wanting White Gold I would avoid it.

Most White Gold rings are flash plated with a very, very thin coating of rhodium (a pure white metal) to give them a more brilliant, pure white appearance. This rhodium plating will wear off over time and reveal the (yellow) gold ring underneath. Then they will need replating.

my engagement and wedding rings were made by a local jeweller and they are unique.
They are white gold and she did warn me that they would need replating. But silver wasn't durable enough and we couldn't afford platinum.

I have now been married for 23 years, and it is still white gold. The colour has mellowed a bit, it is no longer bright silver, but still beautiful.
It is a chunky ring that had surface engraving, and the engraving has almost smoothed over, particularly on the underside, but the colour is still definitely silver.

GinLimeandLemonade · 14/09/2022 14:16

These came up as an ad on Instagram for me recently; no idea what they're like but you could look into them?

Rock Solid Rings

Daisychainsx · 14/09/2022 14:43

Hey!
Like lots of other have said, white gold isn't the best! The rhodium playing will fade quickly and it can be expensive to have it re-rhodiumed.
I'd also avoid titanium... purely from a safety point of view. It can't be cut off (at least not easily!) Sometimes, if there's an accident or something which causes the finger to swell, the finger is more likely to be cut off than the ring itself!
I recently finished up in a jewellers and we would always advise those on a budget to consider argentinium. It's in the silver family. It's not going to last forever, it'll scratch and likely dent, but there's a lot of nice designs for a reasonable price on etsy.

Riv · 14/09/2022 14:44

If you go for gold op, I think you should go for 9ct. It will wear much better than the higher gold content ones.
I deliberately chose 9ct for my engagement and wedding ring because it is harder. I've worked with children with special needs for over 30 years, (think sand, clay, art materials, personal care, metal equipment like hoists and wheelchairs on a daily basis) and I tend to do most of the DIY around the house. I have never taken my wedding ring off, apart from cleaning it when I get gooey stuff or soap under it!. Although it shows its age a little (like me 😂) it's still looks good. My colleague, married at the same time, with a similar style but 22ct ring, has just bought 3rd wedding ring as the others have worn really badly.

Daisychainsx · 14/09/2022 14:46

Also, my husband has a silicone ring and they're fab. My brother now wears his silicone ring all the time unless he is going to a wedding. I got my DH a platinum ring and it's scratched to bits because he always forgets to take it off for going to work... bearing in mind the platinum one was a replacement for his actual wedding ring which he lost for that exact reason... forgot to take it off before work, took it off and put it in a pocket never to be seen again! So if your husband is working a lot maybe silicone rings are the way forward? Again, you get some really cool designs!

SoldierBoy · 14/09/2022 14:46

DH also wears a silicone ring for his job as he works in maintenance and would easily rip his finger off with a proper ring. Then he wears his proper ring for special occasions. His proper one is titanium, think it was around £150 a few weeks ago. He tried silver and white gold rings but they both felt quite soft and like they would get damaged recently

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 14/09/2022 14:54

I'd go for a gold band over white gold.

Silver is softer but my bands are from Jeremy Heber and are excellent equality and really tough, I garden, do DIY, do pottery and they look like new.

capricorn12 · 14/09/2022 14:58

Does it have to be brand new OP? If you're not bothered about that I would have a look at some second hand jewellery shops and pawnbrokers. You'd get a lot more for your money that way.

cultkid · 14/09/2022 15:05

I have to get one of the rubber ones too!!
What do we think about a navy one?
I love Mumsnet so much thank you everyone for the brilliant advice, heart warming stories, safety tips, allergy information and style suggestions..

I like the idea of a silicone one. He could wear it all the time and it wouldn't be flashy. You could get him a plain band at a 2nd hand shop to wear on dates or other special occasions. So he'd have 2 for the same amount.

My exH really liked those black titanium ones so I had a regular traditional set and he had the black one.

Izzabellasasperella · 14/09/2022 15:32

This is my white gold ring. I've worn it for 12 years, never take it off. It still looks fine I think.
We bought my first one online and it was very grey and too small! So it went back and I ordered this one.
I would go for a thicker band for your dh. My husbands ring is wider as he's quite a large man.😀

I like the idea of a navy silicone one for every day op. with, maybe, a second hand, lovely golden one for weekends and best.
