"I am just reaching out to you" FFS do you mean you are contacting me!!!

I can't bear that phrase!
I hear it all the time in online meetings and cringe every time.

thaegumathteth · 13/09/2022 23:28

See also 'just wanted to touch base'

'Can we park that thought'

'I'll try and source that'

Stangerthings · 13/09/2022 23:30

Someone recently asked me "is anyone utilizing that chair" I replied, "do you mean is anyone sitting in it!"

Along with myself, yourself etc inserted into every sentence where me or you would perfectly suffice.

Ugh, yes.

People who think that using a long word instead of a concise, and often the correct word, makes them look more intelligent.

Aubriella · 14/09/2022 13:02

I can't get worked up about it. We're all just trying to get our jobs done, with our overly polite British way of communicating.

I'm more annoyed by women using subordinate language such as 'I'm just wondering' 'Could I possibly ask you...' etc. I've had to ruthlessly quell this in myself.

Xiaoxiong · 14/09/2022 13:07

Aubriella yes!

"this is probably a stupid question" before an excellent question

"just ignore me if you've already thought of this" before something important that very obviously hasn't been considered

"I'm not sure if this is relevant but" before something that's straight to the point

All from women I've encountered through work in the last couple of days. Grr.

I think it's intended to be a form of politeness.

"Reaching out" is, metaphorically, less invasive than "contacting". It implies "I am requesting contact but not actually touching you". It also has connotations of… almost supplication, a request, making oneself vulnerable, as opposed to just going ahead and "contacting" — if you physically touched someone without permission that would be more of an imposition than reaching out towards them in a requesting kind of way.

Someone recently asked me "is anyone utilizing that chair" I replied, "do you mean is anyone sitting in it!"

Since "utilise" means to use something in a manner for which it wasn't originally designed, I would wonder what they were planning to do with it!

FlissyPaps · 14/09/2022 18:05

Corporate jargon is insufferable!!

”Circle back round”
“By the end of play”
”Warm regards”

PyjamaDuddlejuck · 14/09/2022 19:24

What, like Mr Tickle?

😆

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 16/11/2022 19:08

Any emails trying to sell me stuff that talk about 'reaching out' or similar nonsense get deleted.

Chikapu · 16/11/2022 19:11

As long as they weren't reaching out to confront you...

OnlyFannys · 16/11/2022 19:20

Its bullshit bingo at its finest. The one that I really cant stand is "thought leadership". I refuse to look up what this ridiculous phrase is supposed to me and just stare blankly at anyone who used it.

I had a boss that you could have a drinking game during a meeting everytime "we are all in this together" "we are a team"
